Radio X are currently running a poll to find the best British Song ever.... you can vote for your top 3 here -

http://charts.radiox.co.uk/2018/

But thought I'd start a little discussion and poll on here too.

For me it's very difficult to pick 3 as it probably changes day to day, and is very dependent on what kind of mood I'm in as to whether I'd pick something upbeat or sombre but I'm going to try and come up with 3 ...

No.1 is easy as it's the song I always tell people is my favourite song ever... by British or otherwise.... Sultans Of Swing, by Dire Straits. TUNE.....

Apart from that though, I don't have another 2 songs that stand out, like I say it constantly changes.

Listening to a lot of Rolling Stones at the moment due to booking tickets to see them in June, so I'd probably put Sympathy For The Devil as my no.2 at this present time.

No.3 - Difficult. Feels wrong to not have a song by one of my 2 favourite bands Oasis and Kasabian. Live Forever would have to be top 10, as would a few Kasabian tracks.

Also, having chosen 2 guitar based songs already should I go for something more upbeat? Some cracking dance and drub & bass tracks that I love from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Prodigy & Pendulum.

When you are talking best of British too how can you not include something by Bowie or the Beatles or Queen?

The Stone Roses too... some crackers.

But for my 3rd choice I'm going to plump for another band I'm listening to a lot at the moment... The Smiths and my favorutie song of theirs... There is a Light That never Goes Out.

Done.

And in 2 minutes I'll have probably changed my mind.

So what would your top 3 be?

I've added some selections below but feel free to add your own.

Keeping it simple, I decided just to vote from the ones Deano provided. Therefore, I've gone for;

1/ Stairway to Heaven
2/ Bohemian Rhapsody
3/ A Day In The Life

:35:

save this for later when we are on the new forum gents, this won't export over.

anything after 7am today won't be on the new site later.

The answer is ‘Waterloo Sunset’ by the Kinks - best British song ever should have an indisputable ‘Britishness’ to it for me.

See also ‘Up the junction’ by Squeeze, ‘down in tube station at midnight’ by the Jam etc...

Going to come back with a top three though!

Tricky one this . As Deano said a lot depends on the mood at the time.

Will have to give this some careful thought.

Have to agree with Pride of Lions;

1) Stairway to Heaven
2) Bohemian Rhapsody
3) A Day in the Life

These by arguably the 3 best British bands of all time.

But so easily could have been, by the same bands;

1) Kashmir.....wish Villa could come out to this echoing around VP!!
2) Don't Stop Me Now......sheer soul stirring!
3) Across the Universe.....pure poetry to music!

Sorry for being greedy having two.

Apart from the work of Black Lace, Cliff Richard and Mr Blobby (which all go without saying), I'd have to go for:

1. Live Forever
2. Sympathy for the Devil
3. Karma Police

Home Thoughts From Abroad - Clifford T Ward
Lola - The Kinks
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits

You'll note that these are all songs with an English theme.
