Barnsley (a): Score Predictions, Starting XI & Match Thread

You're not wrong. Battering from left, right and centre.

Getting to the stage where I'm not really looking forward to the start of the season anymore.
You weren't looking forward to the start of last season either were you Jay? I recall you predicted relegation, your opinon on Skubala was very low.Remember describing the record breaking team that achieved promotion to the Championship as Dogshit?

Yes we are all entitled to an opinion Jules.Mine is if 'Old Sheperd ' doesn't find supporting the Imps a rewarding experience he could always find something else to occupy his time .I really hope that clears that up

Correct. I was worried that we might get drag into relegation battle. Thankfully I was very wrong.

And yes, I did describe our performances at one point (and rightly so) as dog shit. They were. Just like this pre season was.

Let's put it this way. I'm going to Middlesbrough in two weeks time and I don't have even a tiny bit of optimism In me at the moment...

Let's hope you've got it wrong again

In pre season we seem to have changed formations and dabbled with positions quite a lot (but I guess it’s the best time to try new things.) Up to now it has shown that we have created and scored very few goals, but also looked open and leaky at the back, again our bastions of last season.

We somehow need to get back on track with being hard to beat and that never say die attitude that got us to 29 unbeaten, otherwise it’s going to be a tough start when I had hoped to carry on that momentum.

The thing that has struck me about the pre-season games I have watched is the sheer lack of energy and pace. Here's the thing: that cannot be by accident. They cannot have gone from a high energy, intense pressing team to walking football unless there is a plan there. Perhaps that plan was simply to avoid injuries: to play a few practice games to gain the much-vaunted 'minutes' and no more, we have no idea what goes on internally.

One thing is for sure: if we play with the same absence of pace and energy next week, we will get thrashed.

Do agree with a lot of what Gary H has said here.

Attack wise really hard to judge at minute, I imagine by start of season our attack will be:
Street
Draper
Reeco
House
Newbie
Newbie
Newbie
And maybe even one more newbie!

Think a lot of our chopping and changing formation been due to not having then options here.

Defensively friendlies don’t lend themselves to way we play, can’t fully replicate the high intensity, win the first contact style. Friendlies often suit the tippy tappy teams. Cardiff beat Roma 4 1!

What is more worrying rather than the results is fact new lads not going to have long to gel, be good if get few before Derby and can give them some minutes then.

‘At least one high level loan’ is an interesting comment in Gary’s article as well. He often knows a bit, hopefully something exciting there.

Makes sense like the Olympic sprinter save your best for the final. Use the heats to stretch your legs

All we can do is give the management and squad the benefit of the doubt.
We definitely need at least three new top draw attacking players before the season starts.
So let's try and be glass half full until a good run of 'proper' games.

I think you would expect teams to be getting up to full speed by this stage of pre-season, having played three or four games.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of some on here, to demonstrate that can I just lay out how Cardiff's pre-season went?

First up we were thrashed 0 - 6 by FC Midtjylland who were well into their domestic season and our players looked like they still had holiday hangovers.

Next up was a 6 - 1 away win at Cork City with a solid second half performance from the more senior players after our "tippy-tappy" possession football had run them into the ground.

On to Forest Green Rovers where we ramped up the press and didn't give them a kick. The 5 - 1 win was by no means flattering.

Yesterday, AS Roma came to Cardiff at roughly the same stage in their preparation that we were when we faced FC Midtjylland. Our press was relentless and the mistakes we forced led to errors that gave us a comfortable 4 - 1 win.

Ironic then that House has been injured. Bradley gets injured in training, Bayliss is injured, Jefferies not available in the last pre-season game.

We need 20 for the real game at Derby. Might see 2 keepers + academy players on the bench.

ive been around football for many decades , like others on here , and have never really taken much notice to "pre season friendlies" , infact its been many years since i have been to one . ok , it gives players a run out , get to know new team mates etc etc etc . wholesale changes throughout the game etc etc . to me the first six games may i repeat may go someway to seeing the the team will havw a good season . i dont think one can gain antthing from friendles , imo of course lol
