BT Sport will broadcast City’s trip to Barcelona live on their free-to-air Showcase channel.
Pep Guardiola returns to his former club on Wednesday 19 October and fans who are not travelling to the Nou Camp can tune in regardless of whether they have a BT Sport subscription or not.

BT Sport Showcase will host a number of UEFA Champions League games throughout the 2016/17 campaign.

With Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva set to take on the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar Jr for the fourth time in three seasons, our Group C clash with the Catalan giants is the latest fixture to be aired for free.

BT Sport Showcase is available on channel 59 on Freeview and UK-based fans can also watch the game online with the BT Sport website.

Supporters can tune in from 7pm to enjoy all the build-up ahead of one of the competition's most eagerly anticipated fixtures, which kicks off at 7.45pm.

I wonder why?

I wonder if they will look at the viewing figures and compare them with City last match against Celtic, which obviously was not free to view?

BT Sport, when they announced they had won the rights to show UCL and Europa League broadcasts within the UK and Ireland clearly said they would broadcast several FTA (free to air) games involving British clubs. If you remember, they also showed the UCL and EC Finals FTA back in May.

No conspiracy theories required, its was planned and agreed a couple of years ago.

No problem with any City fan having a beef with BT Sports - as you've pointed out, our reasons are well documented. It's the comparison with viewing figures for the Celtic game I'm not getting. Sorry :003:

I am not sure that the Celtic game was free to view so as it is a subscription channel will there be an increase in viewing figures. I being one of those who told BT to shove their subscription, but am will to watch if it is free although I may have to mute the sound depending on who they wheel out front of house

I think it's a safe bet the viewing figures will be up, as you say, it's free to view. And it's Barca, though presumably the Celtic figures would have been reasonable given their fan base in the UK. The '7 reasons why' article in your post above hints that the BT free to view selections last season got lower viewing figures than previously on ITV due to fans 'distaste' for their programming style. This might be true, but it might also be because people still need a 'freeview' box thingy now, whereas they wouldn't have to view ITV :048:

If you've got Virgin Media (but not the footie package), the game is free to air on channel 548 tonight
