Bad news for Buddha & travellers in general

Where / how does the proposed law affect:
"travellers who cause no nuisance or problems"
...as distinct from targeting those who do cause problems ?

There is not equal access to a good education for all. All the main parties acknowledge that and aspire to do something about it but it's proving harder to achieve than to promise. Travellers are just one group that doesn't have access to good schooling and that includes those settled on sites. Those functionally illiterate prisoners are not helped by reference to laws requiring school attendance. We have a system that rewards those with the money to buy property in the catchment areas of the better schools.

Nuisance is all relative simply having a caravan or camper van on a piece of land .Can and will be used against people .Simply being there nobody will be exempt this will be used against people living peacefully on a canals and in mobile homes simply for being their same as homeless people they will be threatened and bullied .Settled will become unsettled so schooling will become more difficult which of course goes to the problem of not having a proper education again. This is only the beginning the end result will be far harsher than it appears.

That could be true chris but if no one is actually causing a problem will the police actually enforce it.

I hope, but share Buddhas concerns, this is just giving the police the power to address situations where there is a problem to be addressed.

Hopefully the power won't be used where its not required.

I understand the concern though.

Agree. Getting rid of Sure Start was a disaster imo. Easy short term cost cutting target, hated by the DM and part of the austerity drive by guess who? Will end up costing far more than it 'saved'.
 
Most young people have between 11 and 14 years of education. Then there are others that for one reason or another get far less than the 11 years .Personally I must have missed about 2 to 3 years of school due to ill health during childhood. If you are in the lower educational grades you never really get that back .I have worked full time since I was 17 having been unemployed on leaving school when the dockyard was shutting. I did a little night school for a few years.I am sure there are many other children who have similar problems like I had or perhaps they have almost nothing to eat before school so of course they are going to struggle at school. There was no way my parents could afford a private teacher like fortunately we managed for my son a few hours a week. She was retired and only taught two of three children .We were blessed as she definitely could have found a easier scholar to teach than my son.

That's interesting Chris, but it bears no relevance to the issue with (bad) travellers leaving school. They are taken out of school because their parents don't want them taught about homosexuality / evolution etc. A traveller girls future role will be to be a wife, and the boys will be tarmacing, labouring, burgling etc. It's not a case that they are forced into these roles because of lack of education, it is the other way round

And that is a series of assertions with literally no evidence to support them. There is evidence of the effects of an extended education across all groups in society. The enforced movement of travellers, the lack of sites for them and the obstructions to school admission play far greater part than your unsupported claims.

Headteachers and teachers can only do so much when it comes to bullying. It was bad enough when I was at school these days it is far worse.My son had to spent many lunchtimes with the headteacher for his own protection. Which of course did not help the numbers picking on him.Fortunately he had a excellent head who made sure he protected those students who were mist at risk. Bullying and lack of stability for those without a permanent home will not get better under present government they will get worse. My son is still suffering from what happened at school the kung fu kick on his back still has affects him as well as the mental scars. What was often said well he should defend himself. That is not so easy if 30 kids are picking on one or two individuals. It is no wonder some children stay away from schools.
There is no cane in todays schools if there was the queue would be a mile long at many schools.No doubt many travellers children fight back more than my son ever did and get in serious problems with the schools as a result easier to get rid of the odd one out than the masses.

Where has "Sure Start" been "got rid of" ?

Are you aware that in places like Bromley they were / are labelled "Children & Family Centres"....
...and Bromley Council has at least 6.

How does one explain those traveller children that turn up for half a term - go elsewhere for months - then reappear months later....
(occasionally forgetting their name !)

Sometimes they claim to have been attending a school elswhere.
They may have done....
...but that is hard to check if they have used a different name #.
(according to local teachers)

(# "Why" they use a different name would be speculation .....:unsure:)
 
No one's interested Tarian. Traveller kids do badly at school and then grow into criminals because people are racist towards them. That's not my personal experience, but jogills seemed quite certain

Kids will verbally attack anyone who is different. Sometimes some resort to violence. You don't need to be a different colour or even nationally. Very tall kids,Very short kids ,Those who struggle to do the basic schoolwork,Kids that are especially gifted ,Those who are not at school regularly,Kids that speak or act differently and so on.Out of a class of 30 you can probably guarantee that there will be at least one target.Travellers will almost certainly suffer more than most .But have no doubt there is real problems for at least 3.33% of children at school due to the fact that some young boys and girls make sure at least one person in their classroom life is a nightmare often for 11 years or more of their life.

It's a natural thing , a dog eat dog world , where the strongest survive. Nothing new , unless of course one doesnt believe in the evolution of species.
