Spice can be great when added to certain things. Take wine, for example: add some spice to that and you have mulled wine, very topical for this time of year. Add some to good quality white rum and you end up with spiced rum; I worked that out all by myself, you know. Think I may have a glass of that later. Or three.

But added spice to a Lincoln City v Barrow match? Was it a promotion battle? Could City go top of the league? Was a new club record in the offing?

Er...no.

Unfortunately the added spice lay in the questionable conduct of certain individuals over a loan transfer. The player in question couldn't play - no change there, then, he seldom can - and we were reliably informed that he would not be at the match. Oh dear, the duplicitous nature of the whole saga was thrown into the spotlight again as the man of the moment turned up. Apparently he wasn't happy at some of the comments thrown at him by City fans. Really? What did he expect, then? A welcome party involving lissom Hawaiian hula girls and a lei? Never mind Barrow, I think he may have gone to Gaga Land, and I don't mean a batty American pop singer either. And he thinks he can come back in January?

As Rowan Atkinson once eloquently put it in a famous NTNON sketch, "Pah!"

As usual, there was one outstanding individual dominating the ratings. MATT RHEAD'S two goals and that incredible overhead kick confirms that we have a very special footballer on our hands. Just a big lump? Far from it. This guy is a real footballer, and he takes the top vote for the second game in a row.

"In every sense of the word, a colossus" (Cricklewoodimp)

Another fighting performance gives the improving JACK MULDOON second place. Always impressive in terms of determination and sheer work rate, Jack is now starting to show what he is capable of; what a pity some of the other players have taken a dip in form at the same time.

"Unfussy running adds another element to our attack" (Dreaming of McAuley)

And in third place we have MATT SPARROW, whom many fans feel should be an automatic starter alongside Craig Stanley; the two players are the bedrock of our midfield for different reasons. But does the management fully appreciate what he does?

"Was doing well when he was taken off" (tornado imp)

The match itself could have been so much had City not squandered that two-goal lead. To pick up a solitary point from that position against a side in the lower reaches of the table was not good. The average team score of 6.07 suggests it was a mediocre performance at best; I wonder what that score would have been had the lead been protected, or even extended as it should have been?

So another disappointing result leaves us in no doubt that the squad needs strengthening if that elusive play-off spot is to be a possibility. Added spice or not, City are not good enough to sustain a challenge to the wire. Cometh the hour, cometh the man: cometh Clive Nates.
