(Audio) 'Since Keith Hackett Retired, It's Got Steadily Worse'

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey is not impressed with the current state of refereeing standards in England.

"I think over the last five to six seasons since Keith Hackett retired from the general managers position I think it’s got steadily worse. I really do.

"We’ve got the likes of Mark Clattenburg who’s by far our best referee. Martin Atkinson, Michael Oliver, Anthony Taylor, Andre Marriner and of course Mike Dean I think they are up there but then that’s all we’ve got.

"I mean if you look at the top, top games you’ve got the likes of all the big derbies, all the big games you’ve got Man United and Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea, Chelsea and Arsenal, Arsenal and Tottenham and they can only be refereed by a certain amount of referees. Four or five referees because the PGMOL do not trust the other referees to take charge of those games."

Referees have been a ‘bone of contention’ for us Blues for quite a while and so, if you listened to the BBC audio clip does Mark Halsey make a valid point?

I heard someone over the weekend comment on the refereeing issues to the effect that as games in the PL have gotten tighter and team strategies have cancelled each other out, then often the decisions of the referee become a focal point - that a mistake (penalty decision, failure to send someone off for a blatant foul :019: , sending someone off for a tackle which isn't a red card offence etc) can become far more critical than they used or be in the past.

Not sure if I wholly agree but I am of the opinion that the officials could do with more support from the technology that is available. In the MLS this support is available as they are mor focussed on getting the decision right rather than the mealy mouthed arguments about 'not wanting to re-referee every decision'. Heaven forbid that in one of the top sporting professions in the world we should use technology to get the decision correct.....

I mean, it's not like they use it in say tennis......or rugby.......or cricket

Have I missed any?

John Terry got sent off yesterday and I thought it wasn't as bad as the Luiz no foul challenge, but refs decisions do change games and if they are the wrong decisions then they should explain their decisions or have the Chief of refs explain it for them.

We have Sky and BTSport who employ the use of refs to adjudicate of these decisions, but no matter what it does not change the result, but there should be a punishment for refs and ass refs who get it badly wrong.

It was Martin Samuel on the Sunday Supplement, Skoorb. I was fascinated to hear it.
