Atletico Madrid-Manchester City Champions League Post Match Thread

Atletico Madrid 0 - 0

City survived the battle against Atletico Madrid and now play Real Madrid in the semi-final. It was a different game from the first leg. Atletico put the City defence under lots of pressure and they responding well ensuring that Ederson had little to do.

After 9 minutes City got a corner and Stones headed over the bar - a shame really but at least we got a chance after being put under early pressure. On 12 minutes there was a bad foul on Phil Foden by Felipe. Foden had to have a head covering on for the rest of the game. It should have been a yellow card. However Felipe did get a yellow card 12 minutes later when he fouled De Bruyne. City were getting a bit more of the play and after a shot by De Bruyne was deflected for a corner there was a let-ff for Atletico when a shot from Gundogan hit the post.

On 35 minutes Ederson actually had to make a save and two minutes later Cancelo had a long range effort but it went well wide. At half time City were ahead on possession but Atletico started the second half with lots of power and the City defence had lots to do.

On 64 minutes De Bruyne who had been fouled a few times and had a quiet game so far was subbed by Sterling and alas two minutes later Walker was injured in a clash and though he came back on he was subbed by Axe on 73 minutes. Atletico continued to attack but the City defence did well and with ten minutes to go Benardo Silva was subbed by Fernandinho who was quickly fouled!

On 85 minutes John Stones made a wonderful block to stop Cunha beating Ederson. Atletico continued to attack and several efforts went close but then on 90 minutes Felipe got his second yellow for another foul on Foden. Then pandemonium started when the Atletico players surrounded the referee and eventually we ended up with almost 12 minutes of added time. Towards the end of added time Ederson had to make a couple of saves but City managed a clean sheet and go through to play another team from Madrid! I think City were still suffering from the hard game against Liverpool. The worry is the game at Wembley on Saturday with both Walker and De Bruyne doubtful through injury

A point made on the Blue Moon forum which is the only logical explanation.

"Think this particular fine is issued to any side that has 5 different players booked rather than for any specific incident.

They had 4 players booked (although one of them was booked twice and therefore sent off)"

it is so wrong and unfair when Atletico were the instigators of trouble they get off scot free

Ok......but there ought to be some account taken of the context of the game and the nature of the incidents. If UEFA vase fines purely on a stat like that . .... there's something wrong.

I agree with Martin Samuel "why don't UEFA just bring in a rule that says whatever man city are doing is illegal. It would save a lot of time, insider networking and hypocrisy "
