Aston Villa vs Everton Saturday 18th September 17:30

I thought that was a very hard working professional performance with Bailey providing the flair. A big win and the atmosphere in the stadium clearly pushed our players to be better than theirs.

Thought we were the better team throughout, which against Everton, even with their injuries, is something. We were pressing them hard, which we didn't used to do. Only thing was there was a danger we'd continue on top but without scoring, then one of their attacks would come off. But we did score, and after that there was only one team in it.

Still don't think 3-5-2 makes the best use of our resources. Today, as against Chelsea, it gives us a good performance in the middle of the pitch, but without that cutting edge up front. Until, that is, three individual moments of brilliance bought us three goals. Whatever, a very entertaining game.

We've slipped into the top half of the table and have a positive goal difference. What not to like.

Now now Mike, you do know I have a limit and can turn into someone far worse than a mere "bellend" if and when it's required;):rotfl:

I agree to a point as in I think that was the game plan.

But.

We were shite and even set up to contain them, should've been two/three clear in the first half if decisions were better.
Sure. We didn't get it right up front but we had them absolutely nailed down. McGinn excellent and even his passing was bob on.

I would just like to mention a few. Bailey is some player by the looks of it. I thought Nakamba did pretty well also. If we are going to play 352 on a regular basis we need a left back with a lot more pace or play Bailey there.

Cash has enough pace to do it but Targett does not at LB. He is ok with someone to run outside him but not in a 352 he cannot beat a player. I have no doubt DS realises this.

Don't know about anyone else but I watched us totally nullify Everton for an hour bar a couple of crosses and then blew them away after that. Don't know how that first sixty minutes gets classed as crap.

Perhaps Bailey wasn't ready to start a full 90, seeing as he only ended up lasting 20, but more likely we all saw the promise of that Chelsea performance and we were sensibly trying to prevent Everton's usual counter attacking style and, like, maybe the manager actually got it right?

I highly doubt Smith went into that game just hoping to be in the game with it being 0-0 after an hour. I suspect he went into the game thinking our front 5 and two wide men would produce more clear cut chances and be ahead but it didn’t work. Whilst it’s completely subjective and you can throw the final score at me, I doubt we’ll see 3-5-2 at home again this season unless we’re playing Liverpool or Chelsea, which is telling about whether it worked or not.

The upside was though as you said we had a handful of options on the bench for once who could change the game, this time last year it would’ve been just El Ghazi.

It’s all a bit irrelevant now I guess, we all called for Bailey to be brought on and go four at the back, Smith obliged and we won :utv:

Just got back. Buzzing.
Bailey certainly looks like he is a worldy doesnt he. I just hope he is not another sicknote. Fingers crossed.
Ramsey for me looks a real real talent. Looked so comfortable and confident on the ball and really deserved a goal today.
I don't think bailey played left wing back. I think Ming's went left ish back when bailey come on.
When young replaced him, young went left back yes. But the 21 minutes bailey was on the pitch no way was he a left wing back.

Ollie us a very likeable guy, and I do like him. But he has to step on this season, as there is a lot to his all round game where he can and needs to improve. I get the feeling he’s not going to be the first to be dropped as he’s a Smith favourite, but his touch and all round game is too loose and sloppy. If Bailey, Buendia and Ings are in better form, I hope Smith will make the difficult decision to bench him as it’ll be for his own good in the long run.

Back home had my tea and looking forward to MOTD. Very enjoyable game. We won so I’m not looking for weaknesses but a few deserve a mention in dispatches.
McGinn a dynamo in midfield. The back three were a steel wall. Cash was every inch the Polish #2.Ramsey‘s growing with every game. And Bailey!
The lads singing his name on the way past Aston church we’re certainly impressed. Catchy little number.
