Aston Villa v Wigan Athletic, Sat 11th August - Match Thread

Erm..... why the hell are you arguing ?. It is not me saying it, its BRUCE. go and read the transcript of the after match press conference and if you dont believe him, call 0121 327 5353 and ask to speak to him !!!!. Christ sake Villan it was abundantly clear what happened yesterday. Whelan was immense v Hull and tge best player in pre season - was he dropped coz hes crap ?

We don't have '8 games in 3 weeks' tho -
we've 4 to play til 1st Sept
(and a joke cup game)

think you're fooling yourself if you think Bruce is rotating the squad at this stage
That’s what Bruce has said though in his post match interview.

He also mentioned before that he felt he made a mistake in not rotating it enough last season, so it seems like he’s gone over the top in the opposite direction. 6 changes after 1 game is too much, although I suppose a couple were new signings who will probably be playing regularly from now on

Calm down you'll be having another heart attack, they were left out dropped call it what you want. You can't rotate players after one game, that means they'll all be back for the next League game and that won't happen.
Hardly going to come out with I'm dropping a few, is he?

Thinking about it, the wind was blowing quite strongly from the Holte. A small thing but possibly enough to take pace off the ball.
You can't make excuses for poor play.

As others have mentioned, it is early stages but Leeds look like Wolves and Middlesborough look like Cardiff. We will see how the season develops, but Bruceball will only take us so far. We need to play through the midfield, get Grealish to pass and move, no more hoof it and chase like a bunch of under 8's.

We are slow and ponderous in attack and don't press effectively. Both these things need addressing for us to progress. Do we have the players? I think so, and we showed it in patches last year.

Hutton was actually goalside gm.
It's just that the Wigan player almost dived forward to get his head on the ball.
So Hutton allowed him to get goal-side - thanks for agreeing.... arguing for the sake of it now I think. As I said, it's all about perspective and the scapegoating of certain individuals.... No hammering of any individuals on the second goal, but absolutely bashing Jedinak for the first just because it was a more "visible" error....

Come on mate! As if!! Bruce has been here two years nearly, don't think that way of playing is on his radar.

As you say, set piece goals will only get us so far, and we rely on them far too often to get us over the line.

It is very early days in the season obviously, and two wins is a wonderful start. The main thing is we get points on the board as soon as possible as this will breed confidence. We don't want to be playing catch up yet again.

It could be argued that getting promoted is all that matters, however we achieve that. But if we can build a decent pressing, attacking style, we will be far better off if we do go up - it's no surprise that Wolves and Fulham are widely expected to stay up comfortably, while Cardiff are favourites to come straight back down.
If you are expecting Bruce at the age of 57 to suddenly abandon his "style" and become Pep over night I think you will have a long wait.
I am a Bruce fan but I gave up on any hope of ever seeing an entertaining Villa side under his stewardship a long time ago.
Its not what he does, its not what he has ever done.
But like it or like it not he has been effective at getting promotion over the years, so I will stick with him and hope that this is the season it happens.

Haha , the wind was not the culprit, it was just a shite backpass with a new jittery keeper who was slow to respond .
Someone else blamed the new grass earlier !!
A shit pass is a shit pass regardless of wind or grass conditions

I think McGinn was bought precisely to enable us to attack more through the centre. It alters the balance of our attacks. Problem we have is that when Jack gets the ball then other players should be hurling themselves into positions which gives him more options and they don't, or at least not enough. The combination of McGinn and Jack in the centre is far more dynamic.

Not even sure it was intended for the keeper; it could have been for Chester. In the end it was somewhere in between.

Thing is though Mc Parland are they not flinging themselves forward to give options because they dont see it, or because they are playing to instructions from the boss.
I too hoped McGinn was bought for this reason but dont have great faith that Brucie will change.

We need to try Hogan when he's fit. He likes to play waiting for the through ball on the shoulder of the last defender. Jack and McGinn surely can supply these.

I'd need to watch it again (which I won't) to see if he looked up or not and what he intended.
Either way yesterday plus the Sheff Utd abomination means he should not play CB again barring a total emergency scenario

No gm I haven't agreed with you, Hutton didn't allow Connolly to get goalside, he did allow him to get to the ball first, which is different.
By the way, I haven't 'bashed' Jedinak for the error that led to the first goal. Even though it was a diabolically silly pass from someone as experienced as Jedinak.
If Jedinak meant the pass for Nyland, or Chester, he was 20 yards out in his aim and hit the pass too softly, giving Nyland only a 50/50 chance of getting there.
Nyland actually did get there first, by about a quarter of a second. The keeper was unlucky that the ball bounced off the forward into the net.
About Jedinak, I will say that we just cannot afford to have him play centreback, as it is a specialised position that he doesn't understand and he will cost us, not only goals but points if he is played there.
Not his fault entirely but, some of the errors could be cut out if he'd concentrate a bit more.

2 down 25 to go (going by Cardiff's 27 wins last season to secure 2nd)

Don't care about how we got the win, important thing is we got it. And in McGinn and Grealish we have a midfield capable of destroying any defence in this league. Just wait till they've had a bit of time to play together.

With regards the changes I think it was a combination of rotation and dropping people.

Yes, he said he didn't rotate enough last season, and has also mentioned the number of games, but he also said after Monday that he didn't like the performance despite the win, so i think players like Taylor and Elphick were dropped, whereas some like Whelan were rested.

Fact is we have a pretty decent squad, so any side he puts out should be capable.

Personally I’m concerned despite the results. This home performance smacked far too much of last season and Bruce has got to be brave enough to take his hand off the brake and play higher up the pitch. Playing Jedinak is symbolic of his thinking, slow and ponderous.

Concerned by the performance, for much of the game Wigan were the better team. It's hard at this stage to gauge how good Wigan are and equally we had a lot of new players bedding in.
You'd like to think we will only get better.
The defence isn't looking good though, needs sorting fast and I don't ever want to see Jedi at CB again

Confidence is everything in this league.... getting these wins early on now matter how they are acheived will just help the lads in the games to come as they start to play with confidence and express the, selves more.

Just grasping at straws in the wind. Glad to have provided some mirth.
