Aston Villa v Sheffield Utd - Match Thread - Friday 8th Feb, 7.45pm

Super Jack was having a scan on Saturday and nearly running at full tilt.

Not sure if he will be ready for Friday if that is where he is at.

Another big game under the lights at Villa Park though I guess we'll be saying that the following 15 are also'big'games! I don't mind these Friday night games once in a while, with the weekend to come...providing we win of course..otherwise it's a bloody long weekend! Sincerely hope Jack is ready to return and looking for the defence to continue with the improvement shown on Saturday....relieved Mings hasn't received a 3/4/5/6 lifetime! ban that so many were crying out for....he ( and Elphick) looked very promising on Saturday and it would have been very 'Villa' like if he'd played one game, looked very good and then disappeared for four or more weeks! Thankfully that hasn't happened and we'll hopefully put on a performance we know we're capable of. We'll need to play well. Sheff Utd are a decent outfit, well managed by Chris Wilder and we owe them one after the pathetic display up there earlier in the season!

Think DS will stick Jack on the bench, if he's there at all. He doesn't want a relapse.

I have hopes of this Elphick/Mings CB partnership. A solid defence would give us a massive boost.
How come Elphick has come back into favour after being farmed out to Hull?
Well Bruce sent him out on loan leaving us with only 2 centre backs , one of whom he played at right back despite us already having 4 natural right backs.

Anyway Tuenzebe eventually moved to centre half but broke his foot leaving us with Chester who was also carrying a knee injury so as soon as it was January Smith recalled Elphick .

So are Elphick and Mings going to keep their places long term or is it a needs must situation right now?
