MATCH FACTS
Sterling lights up in the League Cup - the stats
  • Arsenal and Manchester City last met in the League Cup in the 2018 final, with City winning 3-0. The Gunners have lost their last three League Cup matches against City, also losing in the quarter-finals in both 2009-10 and 2011-12.
  • Manchester City have won their last four away matches against Arsenal, all in the Premier League. City are the only team to win four consecutive away games against the Gunners at the Emirates, while the last team to win four consecutive away matches against Arsenal were Chelsea between 1960 and 1965 (six in a row).
  • Arsenal have been eliminated from seven of their last nine League Cup quarter-finals, reaching the semi-final in 2010-11 and 2017-18 in this run. This is the Gunners' 29th appearance at this stage, more than any other club.
  • Manchester City have progressed from/won the final in each of their last 18 League Cup ties and haven't lost a League Cup match in London since December 2003 (3-1 v Spurs), winning seven and drawing two since, winning on penalties in the two draws.
  • Manchester City's Raheem Sterling had been directly involved in 17 goals in 25 appearances in the League Cup (10 goals, seven assists) and has found the net in each of his last two matches at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal, both Premier League encounters.

Arsenal 1-4 Manchester City

Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's getting a little bit sloppy and a little slow in the Arsenal play now. A few tired bodies out there. You hope that the youngsters who have played tonight will learn a few lessons from this. You hope that Mikel Arteta has learned something about his players tonight because at times, they have done OK but it's been a tough experience at times.

It's been a bit of a runaway win tonight but it's just those mistakes at key times. Alex Runarsson will not want to see that goal again. It was a comfortable win for Manchester City in the end.

Gabriel Jesus looked sharp tonight, looked like he wanted to play and prove a point. He looked like he enjoyed facing up to goal and driving towards the defence, rather than having his back to goal. He looked full of beans.

The stats...
FT: Arsenal 1-4 Manchester City

Arsenal (14) have been eliminated from the quarter-final stage of the League Cup more times than any other side in the competition’s history.

Arsenal conceded at least four times at home in a League Cup encounter for the first time since November 1998 under Arsene Wenger (0-5 v Chelsea).

Manchester City are the first team to win four consecutive away games against Arsenal in all competitions since Chelsea between 1960 and 1965 (six in a row).

'It was a solid performance'
FT: Arsenal 1-4 Manchester City

Manchester City goalscorer Riyad Mahrez, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a solid performance. We started good and then they equalise. We got lucky with the free-kick and then we got the third one and then it was more easy for us.

"We cannot always dominate every game. They can score at any time but in the second half we scored the second and the third and we made it more easy for us.

"I was surprised at the position of [Alex Runarsson]. He was so close to the post and luckily didn't catch it properly and that was good for us.

"We've been struggling but it's football. It's not always easy to score four or five goals. Today we score four goals and it was a solid performance."

'The second half we had more fluidity'
FT: Arsenal 1-4 Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Sky Sports: "Both teams need to score goals, we score four. We changed the set-up, they score a good goal, after the second half we had more fluidity. The second goal was helped, the third maybe offside, so that makes a difference. After 3-1 it is a completely different game.

"We put another player in the position we can make it dangerous. We score a goal, we had a good moment, didn't suffer and they could not make passes in a row, but they changed, pressed better. The second half we adjusted and were a little bit more comfortable.

"The last two or three years we have scored a lot of goals and this year we struggle, but of course goals are important.

"It is good for the rhythm for the players that haven't played. For four years in a row we are in the semi-finals which is a good achievement in this competition."

'Arteta is an incredible manager'
FT: Arsenal 1-4 Manchester City

Pep Guardiola on Mikel Arteta, his former assistant at City: "I didn’t speak with him. What can I say, everybody knows we are judged on results. He can defend himself perfectly.

"I worked with him, we cannot have had our success without him. He is an incredible manager. I know his proposals and what he will do. Not even a little run of bad results is going to change my opinion."
