Are We Beyond War?

I'm not sure if this is the right place but it's tied up in politics so I'll pop it in here:

Are we beyond the need for war?

Have we reached a point in civilisation where we have enough for everyone and we could build a world of peace and decency or are the Earth's resources still too limited?

Moved into it's own thread BB, thought it was a decent question.

My quick answer whilst pondering is we should be, but we aren't, because mankind is stupid.

There will always be war - but not just because the lack of resources.

There is always someone trying to infringe their lifestyle onto someone else.

And it doesn't matter who it is; whether it be the West, East, North, South etc there is no such a thing as "we are right" & "you are wrong" = As it is just about the group that you find yourself in. The Jew could very easily have been born the Palestinian. The Muslim could have been born the Christian. The Atheist could be the believer, The Republican could have been the Unionist - non of it matters because they all think they are right and when one encroaches onto the other - they will defend their lifestyle and choice.

And our survival instincts tend to lean towards growth, expansion, breed. So when Britain conquered whomever it conquered in the day, Spain conquered who they conquered etc - its just part of the human make up and the breeding & expanding of your group. Which will always happen!

We should be, but whilst rich people want to become richer and religious nutjobs want to impose their beliefs on others, then no, we aren't beyond war.

Greed and fundamentalism. Two of mankind's greatest gifts to the World!!!!

I think you are partially right Bob but I believe that the main guiding motivation behind both the desire to aquire riches and the desire to enforce religious beliefs is really the persuit of power. Power over others can be intoxicating.

Spot on Heathfield. When I read BB's initial post I thought exactly the same.

:14:

The more the world changes the more it stays the same: There is nothing new under the sun in the life of man since the beginnings of time. The only difference is the disguise it comes in.

The world is still full of cheating, stealing, violence and crime. Nothing knew. As it is down to people's behaviour

We will never beyond war until we are beyond greed, envy and the will to force our beliefs on others.

Greed and power - the two driving forces that compel man to seek more of the same. Religion and Politics are the route causes of warfare. And when we venture out beyond Earth, that seed of insanity will spread with us, unless as Col8 says, we can get beyond our basic instincts and capacity to wage war on others.

Yep, totally agree with that. I just think that it's money and religion that are used as the tools to gain this power.

Nah, we need a good culling and loads of nukes set off to the other sideof the world imo and that would make peace on earth again!

As long as bankers rule the world there will always be war. Bankers clean up from war, as do their friends the major corporations. It's not beyond them to actually start wars under the premise of something else such as freeing a people from a dictator, a terrorism attack, or "weapons of mass destruction".

Millions and millions of people have died throughout history for nothing. It's insanity.
