“They went to Frankfurt away from home in the second-leg, they went to Bodo and they defended properly and looked like a dangerous team, hitting teams on the counter.
“It’s not just winning the Europa League trophy, they got to the semi-final of the League Cup, they got beaten by the champions Liverpool over two legs, every time they had to defend properly, they produced.
“So when you reflect on that, I’m absolutely baffled why he actually got the sack, he deserved another 12 to 15 games.”

This is exactly the case... which kind of makes last season more frustrating because he did do it at times. So why didn't he do it more?
The question is with what he delivered why wasn't he given the chance to do it more.
I'm inclined to believe the reports that the players requested a meeting with Ange to express their concerns about how they were being asked to play when it wasn't working and it was only after this he allowed them a bit more leeway to play to their strengths, hence more priority given to defence instead of gung-ho attacking in the EL.This is exactly the case... which kind of makes last season more frustrating because he did do it at times. But could you then answer that with another question...
If he had been more pragmatic, more often, would he have finished in a league position that completely took the choice of sacking him off the table?
He bet the farm on the trophy. I would have moved all my resources to that as well.
Given how you've seen how most/if not all the key players were so distraught about his sacking publically, do you still believe that?I'm inclined to believe the reports that the players requested a meeting with Ange to express their concerns about how they were being asked to play when it wasn't working and it was only after this he allowed them a bit more leeway to play to their strengths, hence more priority given to defence instead of gung-ho attacking in the EL.
Yes, why wouldn't you? If as a senior player you can see things aren't working in a serious way would you just carry on without questioning things? I wouldn't and I would hope my boss was open to discussing the issues.Given how you've seen how most/if not all the key players were so distraught about his sacking publically, do you still believe that?

Players and coaches normally spoke about a game in the review video room, as ours did/do - there would be no need to 'request a meeting' but whatever, it really doesn't matter now.Yes, why wouldn't you? He thought so. And he delivered. So in hindsight his decision making resulted in the desired outcome. You can argue methods all day long (so can I View attachment 81635) but we cannot dispute results.
Got to be honest, there were times during the season when it was hard to watch, because in 12 games we were ahead or in control but couldn't maintain it; we relied on kids for too many games or players who just we'ren't good enough, so context when we make these statements is also true.Of course not. He delivered a trophy and nobody can take that away from him. I think he made a big mistake though. I see no reason he couldn't have been pragmatic with the same players he ended up using at the same times.
Dare I say it... I think he underestimated himself!

Frankly, I think when he did take a different approach, the press would hound him about abandoning his principles, and to my mind, he let them get under his skin, which affected his judgement. sadly, too many of our managers appear to allow that to happen to them., but of course that's because they know Levy and know that our average tenure is 1.83 years....
