Andy Locheads birthday

the r word

Vital Youth Team
May I be the first on here to wish my very first all time hero A very Happy Birthday for tomorrow . There have been other hero's but you never forget your first :94:

Happy birthday Andy, one of my all time favourites. My dad only went to one game at Villa Park, the League Cup semi final against United in 1970. I can still see Lochead going up as Ian Ure was on his way down and Andy planting the ball in the back of the net for our first goal of the night.
The crowd on the old Holte End surged forward and dad ended up on the floor. He never went again.

Yes, I remember too wittonite, I was there.

Happy Birthday Andy Lochead. Bit of an early hero of mine too, together with Brian Godfrey and Pat McMahon who scored the other goal that night which sent us to the final against Spuds.

Yes wittonite what a memory that was!!! I was lucky enough to attend both games, Old Trafford and Villa Park, and the great man Andy Lochhead was a colossus for us. I cannot think of any defender relishing the thought of coming up against him.....hard as nails and just did his job. That night at Villa Park is etched in my mind as much as any other in my nearly 55 years of following Villa!! I know we have won the League and European Cup, but that night, a 3rd division team beating Man Utd with their "Holy Trinity"', Best, Law and Charlton, incredible. I'm sure Villa Park, in particular the Holte End, rose off the ground when Pat McMahon's winner went in.......oh Happy Days!!!

villasince67 yes i do remember 0-6 at Oldham very well ......even though I wasn’t there !
Happy Birthday Andy.

I had got two tickets in their new stand for my girlfriend , now Mrs Erod , who then lived in Brighouse York’s. The plan was to pick her up , take the game in , and spend the weekend in Yorkshire. MGB broke down in the middle of knowhere. Bashed it with Basil Faulty twigs, but no good , clutch had gone.
Arived at girlfriends by foot at about 3

Only got final score. I could not believe it.

In the third division days we had a contact at Villa who would tell us which hotel the team would be stopping at before and after the game.
We would always sit in a corner wearing our colours and didn’t trouble the players. Andy was a doubt and the one man we couldn’t replace.

The players were relaxing in the lounge after thier meal and Andy got off his stool at the bar and at the same time I decided to go to the loo. Well, we ended up having a pee together. I couldn’t resist it “you in today Andy “ I asked sheepishly
“Ay am fit and playing “ came the reply
It was great to tell fans at the game that he was playing. And of course he scored.
Reading 3 Villa 5

We stoped off at the hotel on the way home , Willie Anderson , Andy and the boys were at the bar enjoying thier victory.

We kept our piece in the corner

Thanks Andy , you nearly kept us up and you made sure we got back.

Happy birthday Andy. The semi final win v Man U is possibly my favourite memory. Brian Kidd handling the ball before scoring and our come back. I was in the Witton end with the old man under the score board. It was raining coins when we scored the second from the Man U fans.

I still have nightmares about the miss in the final mind. Thanks for the memories.

How come players from the 70s looked a lot older than they were? Lochhead looks like hes in his mid 40s in 1971.

If I remember wasn't it Ron "Chopper" Harris who reckoned the hardest player he ever faced was Andy Lochhead. However hard he kicked, and Chopper kicked bloody hard, Andy would get up, come back for more and dole out firm retribution....good on ya Andy!!!!

I was in the old Trinity paddock standing area (before the blue seats) with my dad. I would have been 10. What a night.

Maybe those old leather balls that got so heavy in the wet, destroyed roots and quite probably a lot more. Imagine getting caught in mid-air between Andy Lochhead and George Curtis!

He called him the big scotch geezer with the broken nose
Brian Little was so lucky to have a minder like that even for the few games they played together and from what he learnt in training
