And people complain about our FA (n/g)

Spain sack their manager 2 days before the start of the World Cup.

I can understand why they're pissed off. Nothing wrong with Lopetegui leaving them to join Madrid, that's football, but can't see why Madrid couldn't wait until after the World Cup to announce the deal, rather than disrupting all of Spain's plans. If it had been Barcelona that had done it the Spanish press outside of Catalonia would've had a field day.

Can't see how sacking him 2 days before their first game isn't going to solve anything though, other than soothing the FA's pride a little bit.

Without knowing all the facts, it seems plain crazy. That said, Real Madrid and their chairman or president or emperor seems to think he can do what he likes regardless of UEFA or FIFA rules. Git!

The previous chairman of the Spanish FA was somewhat corrupt and was arrested by the Spanish police on corruption charges. The new guy came in about a month ago and made a big statement about personal behaviour and code of conduct. For the manager to sign a new contract and then a month later suddenly be announced as the new Real Madrid manager without the FA knowing the manager was having discussions behind their back would break the new chairman's sense of a code of conduct.

I agree. But I'm sure the Spanish FA must have other ways to get back at Madrid and Lopetegui that don't involve shooting themselves in the foot. I seem to recall most Spanish teams hate the Monday night slot for games, and conveniently, Real Madrid and Barcelona never seem to have to play any of those. I'd have them playing every other Monday for the whole season for a start.

Congratulations to the french, the title of "team that is talented but utterly dysfunctional" that they inherited from the dutch has found a new home.

Fair play to them for acting decisively under difficult circumstances. They will be party to a lot more knowledge of how this will have affected the squad than any of us will be.

Part of me wants to admire them for making a stand like that, and I can certainly understand why they did it. Can't help thinking though that the Spanish FA have more to lose than Lopetegui.

According to most reports, the senior Spanish players actually tried to convince the FA not to sack him. Although would be interesting to see a Madrid/Barcelona breakdown of who was in favour of him continuing and who was against :hmmm:

According to Talksport Madrid only made the announcement yesterday as a player in the the Spanish squad (not a Real Madrid player) found out that Lopetegui was going to Real Madrid as head coach and threatened to break it to the press. Apparently that prompted a rushed phone call from Real Madrid to the Spanish FA, which was followed by the press release from Real five minutes later.

Hence why the Spanish FA were a bit fucked off.

Thank you Don Jose!
