Dele Alli apologised to team-mates and Gent midfielder Brecht Dejaegere for his reckless tackle after 10-man Tottenham crashed out of the Europa League.

Spurs needed to win by two after Gent's 1-0 victory in Belgium last week but Alli's 39th-minute lunge on Dejaegere, and subsequent sending off, made the task all the more difficult at Wembley.

Alli's challenge was high and dangerous, spearing his studs just below Dejaegere's knee, but the Belgian felt no bitterness after the match.

"Dele Alli just said sorry to me and that's nice from him, he's a professional," Dejaegere said.

"We're okay, it's football. I saw the images and it could have been much worse. I don't think he meant it because he came to apologise himself."

Christian Eriksen's opener and an own goal from Harry Kane meant the score was 1-1 when Alli was given his marching orders by referee Manuel De Sousa.

Victor Wanyama's superb second-half strike gave Tottenham hope but Jeremy Perbet's late goal on the break sealed Gent a 2-2 draw and 3-2 win on aggregate.

Dejaegere was able to continue initially but had to be substituted in the 56th minute when the pain in his knee became more acute.

"I felt it was a really hard tackle but then in the moment, you turn the button and try to focus on the game," Dejaegere said.

"At half-time I felt pain in my knee and also someone showed me the image and then my heart was thumping for a few seconds.

"I tried (to play on) because you're at Wembley in front of so many people, but then I had pain so I had to stop.

"The red card made a big difference because even with 10 they found a free man, but with 11 they would have had even one more. I think it also made a difference in the heads of the players."

Alli had cut a frustrated figure in the first half and his challenge appeared an expression of anger, after he had been denied a free-kick moments before.

Toby Alderweireld believes Alli reacted to a previous challenge

Toby Alderweireld said the 20-year-old had apologised to his Tottenham team-mates.

"Of course he said sorry. He didn't mean to get sent off," Alderweireld said.

"Two seconds before someone made a foul on him and he reacted to that but he did not want to get a red card. He is young and I know for 100 per cent he didn't mean (to do it)."

Tottenham are now realistically relying on the FA Cup for silverware this season but to lift the trophy they will have to beat Millwall and then win two matches at Wembley.

Spurs have won only once there in eight games and the suspicion remains that any home advantage is outweighed by the inspiration opponents feel from playing at the national stadium.

"Six years ago I came to Wembley on a guided tour," Dejaegere said.

"I was not allowed on the pitch, there was a sign, 'don't enter the grass on the pitch'.

"It's fantastic, like the Mecca of all stadiums, so it gives you something extra. And if you see how many people were here from Gent it gave us something extra.

"But also maybe they always lose their games here so it can get in the heads of the players. Maybe they just need one big victory here which could change everything."

I would personally drop him on Sunday

Out of interest, what do you think that would achieve? who would benefit from it?

Had we dropped him last season when he was kicking and punching we might have avoided his 3 match ban, but yet for some reason the club chooses not to discipline him and here we are. So that's him hurting the team at the end of last season and now in the Europa league.

Both the club and Dele would benefit from putting him in his place.

That he needs to learn team is first, it's not like he has been pulling up trees recently.

This isn't the first time is has done this, and he could have been sent off a few more times.

Had we done it then, I would have agreed with it.

I wouldn't do it now. Now is the time for him to make amends and show some maturity and re-pay his teammates/club/fans for his stupidity...

I see nothing but downside from doing it this Sunday.

Yeah, let's drop Alli and replace him with....uhhhh...hmmmm....wellllll......naff it. He plays.

Could play with Son and Eriksen off Kane with Dembele or Winks supporting and Wanyama behind.

I still don't think the "punch" was a punch. Player didn't react and in real time he didn't appear to make any real impact but slow mo made it look like he took a swing. Was utterly stupid to raise the possibility of punishment but not a ban for me.

Last night was completely different. The red mist descended and he could have ended that bloke's career. That is fully deserving a ban and whilst I don't know if dropping him is smart for reasons Poch suggests, I'd fine him and donate the proceeds to charity. He cost us the game and could have broken Dejaegere's leg.

What About Our Lord And Savior Sissoko Playing in His Favored Central Position :136:

One of the rare occasions I agree with Pollo, Alli needs putting in his place. Play Winks instead.

Terrible tackle. He is still so young, I can handle a mistake like that at his age.

I still think we are playing him in the wrong position.

I don't think he has the pace, dribbling ability to play so far up the pitch. His control at times isn't quite there either.

He has looked his most consistent playing as a CM. His strength's belong there. Fitness, tackling in the main lol, short passing, bombing forward from deep.

Now with moose nearly 30, injury prone I think it's time to sell.

Play Alli as the number 1 CM that way we don't have to buy another one.

Wana/Alli/Eriksen. All three players playing to their strength's. Wana the destroyer, Alli the box to box CM, Eriksen the tempo setter from the middle of the pitch.

Then we need to sign 2 AM's with pace to play With Kane.

Interestingly Winks has drawn admiration from Harry Kane who said he never loses the ball and has very good passing. That was in response to a question of....who do you feel most comfortable passing to....or words to that effect. Winks has very good pass completion stats already and they are not all dollies either.

Also Kane said Trippier has the best long shot outside the box. Shame we ain't had the opportunity to see it.

.... & so he should. That was nearly as bad as Keane's back in the day. I sincerely hope he learns that doing s**t like this is not cool & will ultimately cost us dear.

As for Alli I think he should be fined heavily by the club for his actions but not banned. His outburst cost us his availability last season and will again for European games next season. If you work out his theoretical pay per game, combined with failure to progress further in the competition and the effect on other players winning medals and damage to the reputation of the club , the fine is going to be big. I think 1 million would be about right. 20 weeks wages .

We have, apart from his tap in against Watford he loses his head like the rest of them.

Oh I agree he should be dropped. But we are still trying to make top 4 and every game matters. If we had depth, it would be a no brainer to sit him.

He's going to be banned anyway so why anybody thinks it's a good idea to drop him truly baffles me. Hit him where it hurts, in his pocket & spur him on to greater things.

Banned from what? CL opening games if we make it?
