All Time 11 Villa Team.

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
following the threads, this is for the wall at Villa Park.

The one thing I hope, is that the midfielder who led the team to the league and European Cup is one of them. If not, the whole thing would be awful wouldn't it?!

In a game of opinions there could be endless hours of debate on this before we even get to the players themselves! To help with this, we have created some parameters from the outset.

  • Formation

raw

To make the short list, we would ask that players have:

Played at least 100 times for AVFC

and / or

won a major trophy

and / or

played in a promotion season

Any of the three above will do.

The lists we have:

GOALKEEPERS
Jim Cumbes
Nigel Sims
John Burridge
Jimmy Rimmer
Nigel Spink
Mark Bosnich
David James
Peter Schmeichel

Thomas Sorensen
Brad Friedel
Shay Given
Jed Steer

Mid:

Alex Cropley (1977 league cup not 100 appearances)
Alan Deakin
Chico Hamilton
David Platt
Jack Grealish (should be discounted for his recent ridiculous actions in my humble, but many will probably disagree)
Bruce Rioch
Kevin Richardson
John McGinn (not 100 but involved in promotion, not all time best yet for me)
James Milner (27 were on loan, just did 100 but not really all time Villa)
Paul Birch
Pat McMahon

I'd be happy to leave one of the others out, but who?!

Not making the list?

Gabby Agbonlahor (long serving but 1 in 4.5 goal ratio and a lot of history)
Johnny Dixon
Tony Hateley

I thought Bobby Macdonald wasa midfielder but if he played in defence I think it would have been right bcak. Hope the rest helps[/QUOTE. Bobby was a left full back in the youth cup winning team but Uncle Ronnie also used him as a midfielder. Alan Deakin was a left sided midfielder Whist Leighton Phillips came as a midfielder but had a great spell partnering Chris Nicholl.

George Curtis Can only see he played as a defender, but then he was only about 39 games so discounted anyway.

Closed the thread for now, so as to avoid any confusion.

Please have a look at the goalkeeper and defender lists and let me know any opinions on any to remove, maybe to add, but only if really deserving.

Will work through mid and strikers in the next few days and do threads.
