Alfie Mawson or Ben Gibson

We're clearly after a new CB. Opinions do seem split on these two but the Mirror are reporting them as our potential targets.

Tottenham are ready to ship out misfit Kevin Wimmer — and replace him with an English defender.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been eyeing Swansea’s Alfie Mawson and Middlesbrough’s England prospect Ben Gibson as summer targets.

But they are keen to get rid of Austrian centre-back Wimmer first to help balance the books.

Southampton are interested while there has also been enquiries from the Bundesliga.

Tottenham have been quoting £20million for Wimmer, 24, who has struggled to hold down a regular place since arriving from Cologne two years ago.

Pochettino is keen to strengthen in defence to give him greater options of playing a back four and a three, while also having more competition and depth.

Gibson, 24, has attracted interest from Leicester, West Brom and Stoke already, with Boro desperate to keep him despite going down.

But Tottenham may be able to tempt them to sell and Pochettino is keeping close tabs on the situation.

Spurs were interested in Michael Keane before he went to Everton, which shows they are keen to buy English, and have also been monitoring Mawson after his impressive displays for the England Under-21s.

Haven't seen much of either. Gibson looked pretty good early season though.

Both are LCB so looks odds on we will sign one of them.

It's so hard to tell whether players who can look great in a poor defence can slot in seamlessly into a great defence. Any defender can throw their body on the line so I'm assuming Poch is seeing other qualities from Gibson and Mawson.

It's also a great vote of confidence for Dier and CCV if we are looking for left footed centre halves. When we play 3 at the back, I thought Dier looked better than when he was covering for either Jan or Toby. It still wasn't great though and I had a feeling we'd be buying a right footed centre half to do what Jan does on the left.

We could see a master-stroke from Levy on this as we may sell Wimmer for more than we spend on one of these guys. Whoever we buy will get plenty of game time next season through rotation. I've not seen much of either of them but I've heard very glowing reports about Gibson.

It would be nice to see CCV get more game time on the right side of defence in the three next season as well.

Both defenders are english. Do you really think we will get 20m for wimmer and get one of these two on the cheap. I dont think so. We will end up paying 18m plus easily.

They won't come cheap. I would have thought both will be around 15-20m. With add ons one way or another.

I'm willing to put a bet on that we sell Wimmer for more than we buy his replacement for. Whether it's Gibson, Mawson or someone else.

It seems we're closer to a deal for Mawson than Gibson and Swansea look close to agreeing a fee if we loan them Onamah for next season....

Could well be a decent deal here for all concerned.

wouldnt be bad plus onamah will get some good experience. I might have a bet on swansea to go down especially if they lose siggy.
