Aldi has announced that it will be selling Wagyu beef this summer. It's one of the most expensive types of steak, at an eye-watering £6.99 for an 8oz sirloin steak. Why is it so expensive, why is Aldi stocking it?

And would you buy it?

Does anyone shop in Aldi?

I stepped inside one once, didn't really like the look of it and came back out again!

Never heard of Wagyu beef. I don't and haven't shopped at Aldi and wouldn't either.

One reason is that I don't know where the nearest Aldi is, I know it's not 'local' so it would cost on diesel to get there..... and that's only one reason.....

I went into Aldi's once as my wife asked me to get some potatoes.

Stood in the queue and when it came to my turn to be served the checkout girl put a "checkout closed" sign up. I asked her just to serve me as it was only one item but she refused , so I just dropped the potatoes on the floor and walked out never to set foot in one of their stores again.

:1: Nice one sirdennis.........

Had it once when I was doing some work in Tokyo. Melts in the mouth and very tasty.

Never been in Aldi but my wife does get stuff from there. I'm a Sainsbury and local retailers shopper myself!

Aldi and Lidi are basically the same shops created by two brothers, one doing Aldi the other Lidi. Some good bargains in Lidi, no Aldi near me. You just need to get out of the mindset that it's crappy produce as it isn't.

Never bought Wagyu beef but ive seen it. Might give it go for £7 because we are talking top end quality steak here that you only usually see in higher end restaurants etc. It might end up being nothing special but I will give it a go all the same - just to see what all the fuss is about.

As for Aldi products, on the whole I find them very good quality. The fruit and veg is very cheap and very fresh with a decent selection. I also find their stores a lot less hassle to get around than the larger supermarkets.

Lidi sell bison steaks, whole lobsters, reindeer steaks, quails eggs and pheasants to name a few at a fraction of the price elsewhere.

Aldi and Lidl are excellent and save me close to €80 per month on groceries, compared with Intermarché, which is the French equivalent of Tesco's. Not only are they markedly cheaper, but the quality is at least as good, often superior to other supermarkets. In blind taste-tests done by consumer magazines Lidl and Aldi come out top time and time again. No wonder Tesco's and Sainbury's are getting their asses kicked.

As far as alcohol is concerned, they are leagues ahead. I can buy really good wine for 1.70 euros, that's about a quid! I can't drink rubbish wine, it makes me ill, this is good Bordeaux, Gaillac or Fitou, for a QUID!! And as for lager... a crate for 5 euros. The only criticism I have is the lack of choice, but the shops close to me are very small so they can't stock all their products at the same time.

Oh, and their household emulsion paint is the best I've ever used, and half the price of Dulux.

always look stack em high, sell them cheap to me. Like the old and awful Kwik Save stores.

However, I realise I'm a single bloke, I have a bit more spare cash as I don't have to feed/clothe a family etc. And the recession has hit etc etc.

So sort of am and am not being a snob!

I like going to Sainsbury, I get the feeling if I shopped around I could trim a fiver a week off my shopping but would find that a chore, time consuming and would cost more petrol anyway.

For what you would pay for a top 4 chains taste the difference or top end steak that's not all that bad really. I would defo try it.

You'd probably trim a tenner a week off on alcohol alone - if you drink.

Asda Iceland and Farmfoods is where we shop, i wnet into Aldi once with the Mrs and we walked out, not as cheap for the things we buy as was made to believe, they was unknown brands that we could get the same price in Asda which was named brands stuff, Farmfoods and Iceland am very cheap and great food.

Not just about saving money mate, Aldi products are far superior than that of Sainsbury/Tesco. I can see where your coming from in regards the past but nowadays they have moved forward big time with the quality of their products. They do a fantastic rape seed oil, really thick and yellow and their mayonnaise is also made from rapeseed oil(and natural ingredients) far, far better than sainsbury or hellmans.

Might go look again one day, however I buy 95% of my meat online! and don't buy any manufactured/pre prepared meals ... So maybe not as much of a saving I wouldn't think?

Interesting article in the paper the other day how the meat from supermarkets is pumped full of antibiotics which in turn is making people fatter

We do about 80% of our shopping in aldi. We have every supermarket within a 2 mile radius of our house, the area has become some what famous for the amount of supermarkets we have, as I'm sure sirdennis will testify. (they've just built a new asda which completes the range).

My missus has been to all of them several times but swears by aldi. Particularly for the fruit and veg which she says is by far the best.
