Shearer offered this pearl of footballing pundit wisdom when Wiggy scored from the dubious penalty spot against Newcastle:-
"I didn't think that was a penalty at all but clever from Wayne Rooney on the penalty - he put the one at the weekend to the goalkeeper's right but put it to the left this time."
I mean FFS.
HOW is that clever? Or an act of footballing genius? For heaven's sake a player has basically three choices when kicking from the spot...left, right or straight ahead. How can it be regarded as clever when he chooses to change direction?
Had he scored by going to the right again Shearer would doubtless have said....
