TOTTENHAM star Marcus Edwards was reportedly the subject of a bid from Ajax – but the wonderkid believes he can play first-team football this season.

Spurs announced a new three-year deal for the 18-year-old Londoner – who boss Mauricio Pochettino likened to Lionel Messi – as recently as July.

But that did not stop the Dutch giants supposedly making a move for his services this summer.

It is thought Edwards put pen to paper on a new Spurs deal after believing he could have a crack at making the senior side this campaign.

And in a series of tweets today, David Powderly, an academy coach with Charlton Athletic, made the claim about Ajax’s interest.

He posted: “Ajax went out to try and buy Marcus Edwards to make a point that English players are good enough.

“They wanted to buy and bring Edwards through, then sell him on at high price. To make English clubs think again.

“The whole point… so English clubs stopped purchasing their youngsters at 15-18.

As we didn't bring in any AM's or wingers in the transfer window you would think Edwards and N'Kou will actually get some game time. Sadly I still can't see that happening.

Would not have been a bad idea to give him to ajax on loan for 6 months then revisit the situation. Like RD said, can't see him getting much game time at all this season.

He'd never come back

Before his injury Nkoudo was supposedly tearing it up in training and to be fair showed well in the pre-season, by all accounts he's been assured of game time this season - if he hadn't, he would have been off and the opportunity to sell him on was most definitly there.

My guess would be to see him starting in Cup games and when fully fit coming on as an impact sub late on.

As for Edwards, I really wish we'd loaned him out - a season or two in the championship and we could have a player that would have the same galvanising effect on us as Alli did.

don't think he'll step up this season then Ex?

TBH your guess is as good as mine, we've seen the impact he's having in his return games and that might well be why we've held him back in the belief that he could make the same impact at the top level if we bring him on slowly.

I just wish we'd sent him down to get that week-in, week out experience that gives you that mental and physical toughness and allows you to develop your footballing game in matches of a higher intensity - trying to do that in the PL is these days fraught with difficulties (would Alli have developed the way he did if chucked in at 17 in the PL?)

- just look at Gray at Leicester who is moaning about not getting game time - he looks a real emerging talent, but Leicester fans will tell you that he makes a lot of bad decisions, loses the ball easily and is inconsistent, all traits that probably would be addressed in a competitive environment where you're playing week in week out.

Exactly.. With this lad it seems we need to thread carefully though. I already get the impression that he has his sights set further than us. Pochettino won't bow down to any fast tracking requests

Not so much here but on other sites, I read of unbelievable levels of expectation for Edwards right now, not in 2-3 years, with utter numpties calling for him to be put into the first-team starting eleven as the answer to various perceived problms we have.

He is 16 for crying out loud, and very few kids that age can hold their own that age in the adult game, let alone the PL, and I don't see him as one of them. Alli is a bit of a special talent but could he have hacked it in the PL at 16? I doubt it, and am sure that regular time in the adult game at a lower level helped him.

I love the idea of Edwards going to Ajax for a couple of seasons as I am sure that would teach him a lot more than being with us - sorry to everyone who won't like to hear that said - but I agree that he probably wouldn't want to come back as, like said above, I think that he does have his sights set much higher than us.

It will be interesting to see if he develops in-line with his own expectaions as we have so much recent history of incredibly hyped young players not ending up as billed - Carroll and Pritchard especially. Let's see how Onomah develops this year on-loan.

He's not 16, he's 19 in a few months.

Ooops!

Not sure where I got 16 from then, and not simply as he still looks like a kid rather than an adult.

He does look 16.

Think this season is overly optimistic for Edwards this season. Perhaps the early domestic cups offer opportunity. Or being negative. A failure to progress in the CL and entering the Europa might give him games. N'Koudou has a better chance for me and his pre season minutes showed promised and improvement

You would hope N'koudou breaks through this season, even with only average cup luck we are looking at in excess of 50 games and we desperately need more options than we had last season in the wide positions. And I hope Edwards at least stakes a claim for rotation this season, we really need better forward players waiting in the sidelines to take over first team duties, you almost feel a lack of pressure is as dangerous as the risk of injury from overplaying.
There are too many nailed on starters in the team imo, that's good when the reason is your first XI is quality, but its starting to lull a few of our guys into a false sense of security imo, especially as although we are heavily investing in our academy we have not really set a pedigree of replacing first team players with academy players seamlessly just yet, and there has been no pressure added to attacking players with transfer additions. I can think of several of our own players over the years who have found a new peak as a result of increased competition, so even if these guys only get some starts here or there, it is a powerful tool to be able to drop a star player if he is underperforming and that can only be done if you have understudies you trust.
