AFC Bournemouth v Aston Villa (Saturday 1 February 2020): Match Thread

Yes Hause was shit but Konsa got subbed off

Perhaps he was injured. If so it really makes the decision to not replace Chester look quite stupid

I do have to wonder whether it kicked off at HT via Mings and Konsa told him what's what - Mings culpable for at least one of the goals yesterday and I imagine he's a gobby fooker in the dredding room which is fine if you're doing your part but if you're having one of your (worryingly regular ........) mare games and you're larging it about in the dressing room then likely as not someone is going to call you on it and it's going to go off.

Who knows but it looked odd.

It starts in midfield. Playing 2 central midfielders vs 3 is too easy to brush aside which allows the opponent to get at our defence too quickly, causing the disarray. Add to that weak midfielders and inexperienced defenders and it’s no surprise really

I quite agree - everything in this game is about balancing resources in each of the different areas of the pitch and if you're pre-emptively under-loading CM and one of those players isn't doing it then you're easily in trouble - quite WTF has happened to Luiz these past two games I do not know, he's looked like a boy vs men, just wildly off the pace/strength of the game.

Is it the weight of expectation of this club hanging over some ?
On paper we shouldn't be struggling v Bournemouth/ Brighton/Watford/etc
2 weeks off is good now. Think we can beat Spurs and Leicester again

I doubt it because if it was then we'd be better away from home and struggle at home.

I think we all just know some players arent good enough and its not their fault either they shouldnt be put in that position.

Konsa’s injured. Not sure who that leaves on the bench if we still play 3 CB’s?

Luiz is a complete enigma, at times looks a world class talent at other times looks well, well below premier league quality.

He reminds me so much of Adama Traore. Different positions but both players came from better teams to gain experience, both showed flashes of brilliance followed by severe lack of quality. In 4 or 5 years Luiz could be an unbelievable player but you have to question should villa in our position be the ones to take the risk on developing him

Well that shouldn't be affecting the players I don't think although it may be affecting DS.

I think Spurs could muller us three or four.

Think Luiz is not a DM. He can't do that job consistently over the whole game. He's better further forwards. Or, like Trez, an impact sub. If Danny is fit I'd play him and Nakamba in the defensive roles, and bring on Luiz when Danny tires.

Think DS was thrown slightly by Konza getting injured. Limited how he could use his subs.

Aye, he's got so many aspects to his game it's difficult to know where/how he should specialise but earlier in the season he looked like he was up for some battling in CM but he's been embarrassing recently, clambering all over the back of players because he's so far behind the pace.

When you look at Luiz and Nakamba there’s definitely skill and energy there but I’m afraid they are lightweight. Nice to play against which is a criticism you can level at several others. Without strength and a bit of meanness in the middle of the park we’re going to get overrun more often than not.

Hence why Drinkwater was brought in he’ll leave the boot in and why McGinn is missed he isn’t easily bullied.

Nakamba does a decent job sweeping and intercepting and does make a lot of tackles or seems to. He’s just swamped in there as it’s essentially him on his own.

Lack of real investment I'd say has been the issue, leading to the issues that come with lower levels of the deprivation scale.
My parents went on hols to Bournemouth year after year. Loved it. Boscombe I suppose is the poor.....relatively....relation down the road. Also I've stopped at Bournemouth when we've been thrashed by Southampton at the Dell in thd past!

I can accept losing every game and supporting the team as long I see us trying to, never mind actually playing good football. But I am not going to pretend like I believe we can turn this around when I see no signs from the way we play, nor the players, nor the manager nor the coaching staff that we can stay up.

God forbid, but once Jack gets injured and we have no hope of creating anything on the pitch is when those who are still thinking Smith is the manager to take us forward will realize that he is anything but that.

If Smith was that good why are Brentford doing better after he left?
Watched Brentford on quest on Saturday. They played more team football than we have all season. Our play is just about Jack. It's why teams surround him. The rest are fitful at best. Useless as on Saturday at worst.

Has anyone explained how the Bournemouth keeper got away with punching Engels in the face without giving away a penalty? We've had days of constantly being told Leicester should have had a penalty but they ignore an even more obvious one when its us. Fuck VAR.
Just a guess....it's VAR after all. But it happened after Engels had headed the ball not before. So they ignored it?

I was very pessimistic yesterday and had a feeling that all was lost this morning so I did the table predictor, fairly, only giving us points where neutrals would, and I still have us staying up at the expense of Norwich, West Ham and Watford. We might be ok.
Best chance of any result..apart from the unexpected point in the bagging area like the one at manu..... has to be against the likes of...gulp....west ham saints...palace ...Sheff u.(!).......and er.....Newcastle?

Why I mentioned what you said about your match day attendance is because it is obvious that Jack was the main reason behind us getting promoted and when he does not play we are at our worst. If you really watched our games and could be honest you would admit the same. If Smith was really that good then why do we play that bad when Jack does not play or has no influence on a game? We have lost both games in which he did not play this season. I understand we played a much better team in Liverpool and Wolves but still we as usual create almost zero without him.

This coaching staff you talk about? Why are we so poor defensively despite having JT? Why can't we pass the ball well? Right, because our staff is incompetent !

The Liverpool game was the one where were had the worst possession and shots on and off target stats this season 😂😂

Over the top nonsense? Based on your post, a good example of a pot calling a kettle black !
A sense of balance. Last season there were others who made a difference. At one point it was Tammy who was keeping us in the hunt.
This season it seems to me that the longer it goes it's all about Jack. Especially now McGinn is no longer a factor.

We’ve had to shore up the defence by sticking another centre half in. Alas, it’s not working. The PL experience in the back 5 is negligible, we look like frightened rabbits when under attack. Not helped by the equally total lack of experience in every other department on the field. We’ve put them in then hoped it would work and it hasn’t. Not a particularly professional strategy but one we’ve seen many times before.
Yes.
Plus someone has had the bright idea of looking at the wolves/Sheff u formations and thinking our lot can do the same ...... Overnight.

I think we're very much having to "make do" mate - clearly, and more often than not recently, the defence are struggling to find anyone in midfield to work with and we're struggling to keep the ball when they do get rid of it for more than five seconds. I don't get, however, how our defence, especially with three centre-halves, are so vulnerable to a counter-attack, they seem to be all over the place with people running at them with the ball.

My boy Nakamba was clearly bossed by Billings in CM yesterday and that's going to happen sometimes, despite Nakamba's cracking recent form, everyone comes up against players/teams that have them over but that's styles rather than outright ability I think.

The problem of course is that when you have more than one or two players not playing well on the day then it can throw out the entire team if others don't/can't make up for it. Guilbert and Luiz were shocking again yesterday, truly shocking to the point I asked during the game whether they were drinking buddies because their form has gone off a cliff at exactly the same time. Show pony Ghazi is the last player you'd expect to firm up the right hand side for us as he's completely anonymous in every game so if Guilbert doesn't turn up either then we're going to struggle on that side.

All told, and while I expect inconsistency, we often look completely clueless at times, like literally no idea what to do but perhaps if you've only got one swinging dick away from defence then this is how it's going to look unless Jack is on the ball but tbh, even that is wearing thin with me, I'm almost sick of the sight of him having to fetch and carry everything at times, sometimes from the edge of our own area.
This. Plus so many good posts over weekend!
What DO El G and Guilbert bring to the party apart from the odd goal?

Weak weak weak. Especially away.

Says who? Our VP record is pretty good. People writing us off against the likes of Manure and Arsenal at home already. What's the point of being in this league when some fans have already decided we're down

I think after we beat Leicester at home we can beat any of the teams at home, if we ride our luck or if they sit back like Newcastle did we'll beat them if they attack us it's 50 50.

I expect West Ham fans and Watford Fans think they're down to, it how football fans are once it becomes obvious that you are one of 6 teams in there and are obviously not very good. All will have fans that think they are unlucky because they all have been unlucky otherwise they wouldn't be there .
