Is he really the right player for us?

He is a captain, has CL, Europa experience. He is a CM who has tempo setting skills. For the right price I would say he ticks a few boxes. Shame he isn't a few years younger.

But £25m + for a 28 year old who has spent pretty much his entire career at Sporting. If he was that good, why hasn't he moved earlier? Seems an odd player to want imo. We have a player who could go on to be a great tempo setter in Winks and it would also be nice to see Onomah given a chance in that role because he did that for the England U-21's and got a lot of praise.

Agreed that fee is way over the odds. 15m is fair. But we do need an experience CM if we are to do something in Europe. Winks is a quality prospect but he is not ready. You can't chuck him in at the deep end and expect us to do well in the CL.

Ono needs to be given a chance at CM but again he isn't ready.

The market has suffered a near 50% inflation rate this summer - it is utterly ridiculous, but clubs like le arse who are desperate to buy their way back into the CL are leading the charge....

Every club in Europe now thinks that PL clubs are fair game to be had over at will - and they're not wrong, just look at RM's demands for Moratta - £80 mill for a squad player!

It's nuts, which means as far as we're concerned we should forget trying to assess what a player true worth is - all we can really do is wait and see if he improves the squad/team.

I was told yesterday by an agent very close to a couple of deals that Everton will not budge on their valuation of Barkley - if that's true, I get cold sweats at the prospect of paying £50 mill for him..

There's an argument that if we stick with a back three, he'll be on the right of that three (at least that's what Ledley was saying at a dinner a month or so ago) if that is the case then we'd possibly need extra defensive minded cover in midfield...so he might just fit...?

It is a MASSIVE step up for him though. The price is ridiculous as well, but that is to be expect at the moment as all prices are ridiculous. Levy must be struggling with the fees being talked about.

Its obvious that the inflation rate has stopped us in our tracks regarding our first choices.

and Levy is too tight to accept the market has changed. Even teams like Burnley, Bournemouth etc are spending £10m-£20m on players nowadays.

Silva playing RCB in a back 3? I have never seen him play there so that is news to me he can play in that position.

He isn't; he was wise to it which is why we did a slew of new contract deals back end of last and early this year. He saw it coming.

But, budgets are budgets and we have to at least try and maintain some semblance of financial discipline as we go through the new stadium build. Our gross spend may still be £100 - 120 mill this summer (which will look small compared to some others), but suspect our net spend will remain around the £30-40 mill mark.

I was at dinner with one of our ever greatest players recently who is also an ambassador of the club, and he maintains that we have the kids who given the right development (key loans) and the will to play them may yet shelter us from some of the current market lunacy and seemed to believe that this summers escalation in mad fees isn't maintainable for more than a year or two - I guess we'll know soon enough.

Have a feeling this is the case as well. Don't know exactly how the payments of the TV deals works, but European clubs will get tired of over-inflated player prices before we do and start negotiating down. Any clubs cashing in and benefiting from the inflated market now will likely only suffer when they come to replace said player. European clubs know they can charge English clubs a fortune and so aren't going to let players go within Europe for much less. The highest price you can receive always affects any deal for less than that amount.

I definitely think Europe will blink first though, otherwise they aren't going to be able to compete with the salaries and PL football will further distance itself on the international viewer stage from all the other European leagues as the best players filter into the PL for the money.

You seriously think we will spend over £100m this summer? Can't see us getting in more than 3 players and I definitely can't see them being over £30m each. Hope you're right though

In fairness, Levy has always made it clear that player sales will be available for player purchases. The team is, and has been for a while, self-sustaining when it comes to transfers. If you think about it, Ex's figures aren't too far off considering we are likely to see some quite hefty sales with Walker, Wimmer, and Sissoko - which is added to by the already finalised sales of Bentaleb, Fazio and N'Jie. Last summer showed that we were willing to have a net spend of around £30m but I would be surprised if it happened again this summer. I think we will spend around £100m but will also make around £100m in sales.

Seen some reports today (9th July) that this is a done deal. We struggled for cm's at the end of last season with Winks and Dembele out so this guy will be a godsend after having to use Sissoko.
