Footballer Aaron Lennon was detained under the Mental Health Act in Salford after concerns for his welfare were raised.

The Everton winger, 30, was detained on Sunday after being spoken to by police on Stott Lane, close to Salford Royal hospital. He had reportedly been followed on foot by officers for 20 minutes.

A statement released by Everton to the media on Tuesday said: “Aaron Lennon is currently receiving care and treatment for a stress-related illness. The club is supporting him through this and his family has appealed for privacy at this time.”

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Police were called at around 4.35pm on Sunday, April 30, 2017 to reports of a concern for the welfare of a man.

“Officers attended and a 30-year-old man was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act and was taken to hospital for assessment.”

I saw the very same article when I popped onto the BBC website earlier this morning.

Very sad to hear the news and like everyone else, I hope he recovers soon.

Wondered why he has not been playing.....mental illness is a bummer cos it is not openly visible ..people think the person is ok but inwardly they are far from ok. Good luck.

Sad news indeed. Let's hope he gets the right diagnosis and treatment he needs to recover.

I just like to wish Aaron a speedy recovery, mental health issues are a serious matter and can affect anyone in any walk of life. Get well soon Aaron, our thoughts are with you.

Aaron's family has asked for privacy to allow him time to recover. I wanted to put up a thread but didn't because I didn't want to give it more publicity but it's just a best wishes post from us fans. We all loved Aaron, we must all want to see his full recovery. It was amazing to see so many sports people who suffered stress problems telling him, like Frank Bruno, 'you will recover, you will be fine'. Thanks Frank.

It's a shame it reached the point of breakdown for him. Probably bottled it up and was scared to tell anyone. Poch has offered his support, not sure what he can do though.

Lennon is a legend in the same way that Daws is for me. An underrated player who rarely let us down and showed a lot of loyalty.

There was no finer sight than Lennon turning Evra inside out when we played manure, and it hardly ever happened to Evra.

Mental money!!

Aaron Lennon on his insane contract at 14-years-old:

"My contract was £5,000 a week as soon as I turned professional, with £10,000 for every appearance. The incentives were wild. It was like, every time I played five games, I'd get £100k.

When I signed, I was 14. They probably thought, 'He’s not going to play,' so there was no money in it unless I actually played. But then I started breaking into the team.

I was on the bench, and they couldn't put me on because I was about to trigger one of those appearance bonuses."

That's quite common or was, but after losing a few real prospects from the academy, we now try and get conditional agreements with real solid terms asap,.
