A-Z of Yorkshire

M MIDDLESBROUGH - still, as far as I am aware, is classed as North Yorkshire and not Teeside, and has been since the time of the Doomsday Book.
Yes.
I was born in Middlesbrough General Hospital, right next to Ayresome Park (while a match was on apparently), and my birth certificate says 'Middlesbrough, North Riding'.
River Tees was/is the border between Yorkshire and County Durham.
The towns both sides of the river formed Teesside County Borough in 1968.
This was 'disbanded' in 1974 and the area (and a bit more) became 'Cleveland', which is more attributed to the Yorkshire part (Land of Cliffs).

Now the Tees Valley area is split into 5 unitary areas/councils -- Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar & Cleveland, Hartlepool and Darlington.

Back in the 1970's, there used to be fighting amongst supporters at Boro matches, between North and South Teessiders.

Mad!

I always class Middlesbrough as Yorkshire - and Hull, though that's in Humberside now.

X - nope, me neither - but shall we have Yorkshire MiX?

Sweets that date back to the 1800's (Gordon Google tells me) when Street Vendors went from Factory to Factory selling a small mixture of the local sweet factory's left over sweeties from the previous day.

Used to love these from the market - fish were my favourite! I'd probably break my teeth if I had them now.

Wasn't the fish cherry flavoured? Like you I daren't risk boiled sweets now - or Thornton's toffee.

Y - Yorkshire Pudding. Originated in northern England centuries ago and originally called dripping pudding as it was cooked underneath a spit with roasting mutton. First called Yorkshire pudding in a recipe book from 1747. We always had it with Sunday dinner but our neighbours served it with gravy before the roast dinner.

Recently we have been having it the 'Yorkshire way' first before the main part of the dinner.

They used to give the children it first to fill them up in times gone by when there wasn't a lot of meat around.

Love Whitby - like you, digger, not been for some years.
We fostered a dog for Saltburn Animal Rescue.
Poor dog had 'issues' and proved very difficult to re-home, she ended up staying with us for over 10 years.
Last place we took her was Whitby - I ended up carrying her up the 199 steps (quite a struggle) as she couldnt manage.
She died within a few days and I just haven't been able to face going back to Whitby since, although I did drive through it on the way back from Bridlington (ironically to pick a dog up for fostering) earlier this year.
As I said, she certainly had issues, but she bonded with me and even now I miss her, even though we currently have 7 dogs in our home at present.
