A-Z Of Winter

It's certainly has been feeling like winter!

A ARCTIC BLAST when a sudden drop in temperature comes from frigid air from the Arctic

B - Blizzard. Usually restricted to high elevations in the UK although Scotland gets a few.

C COUGH - the coughs have started!

D - Dead of Winter. Phrase used to describe coldest or middle part of winter in use since at least the seventeenth century.

E EAR Muffs - to keep those ears warm. Never got on with them myself.

F - FROST - love sunny frosty mornings

G - Gloves. Never go out at this time of year without my Thinsulate thermal gloves!

Mine made their first appearance of the season on Saturday at Reading! Along with my thick winter jumper.

H HOT Chocolate - lovely!

I - ICICLES - so pretty but mean it’s very cold!

J - Jumper. Used to get knitted ones as a child. These days I prefer fleece-lined shirts.

K KNITTED wear - gloves, hats, scarves, jumpers, cardigans . . . . at some time watching the Millers I have worn them all (often together!)

L - Long Johns. A popular type of thermal underwear which became popular in the 1800s and may have been named after heavyweight boxer John L Sullivan who wore similar attire in the ring.

M MUFFLER - another in the long line of winter wear

N - NORTH Wind doth blow and we shall have snow

O - Lots of winter clothing so far so I will avoid overcoat and go for Overcast.

P PINE CONES - on Christmas trees.

Q - Quilt. Originally a multi-layer fabric bed cover. Now often produced in colourful designs. Term also sometimes used as another name for duvet.

R RAIN - we often think of rainy days as winter days but it rains in all the seasons.

S - SNOW - love to see it and walk in the fresh snow but horrid if you have to drive!
