A-Z Of Weather

V Visibility - important weather consideration for anybody on the high seas and a long-standing feature of the radio Shipping Forecast. In case you have wondered for years about what the terms mean...
"Fog/very poor" = less than 1000 metres
"Moderate" = 2-5 nautical miles
"Good" = more than 5 nautical miles

No, wind is not a friend - unless it's a warm wind and it's blowing the washing dry!

X X-Ray Burst - In solar-terrestrial terms, a temporary enhancement of the X-ray emission of the sun. The time-intensity profile of soft X-ray bursts is similar to that of the H-alpha profile of an associated flare.

I have not an idea what any of that means but Gordon does!

Y - Never used as a letter for start of a Tropical Storm/Hurricane name.... so there can never be a Hurricane Yogi or Yolande , for example. There are rarely more than 21 Tropical Storms/ Hurricanes that occur in any year , so Q, U, X and Z are also never used .
If it is an unusual year that exceeds 21 cases, the Greek letters alpha, beta, gamma , etc, are employed.
Strange how that naming system has evolved, although it may change in time.

Well that's another one done!

Well done all and thanks for joining in!

Can only be one that we can do for this time of year . . . .
