F Funicular railway
Not sure about the Scarborough one, but the one at Saltburn is 'powered' by water.
Each of the two cars has a water tank and they fill the one at the top with water.
This then sets it off going down, as the one at the bottom then comes up.
They then repeat the process by filling the one now at the top with water
 
Been on the Scarborough one lots of times, but can't tell you how it works!

Saltburn in on my 'Up North' Bucket List!
With living in the Teesside area, we used to pretty much alternate visits to Hartlepool (North) and Saltburn/Redcar (South), but since we moved up to County Durham we have just been going over to Hartlepool if we want to visit the coast.

I think Saltburn is a lovely place.

Yes, pretty sure you're correct about it being the oldest water balanced one in the country.
