A-Z Of Songs With Place Names In Them

... That's the "Former Soviet Union" for younger readers! There are also quite a lot of songs with USA in the title e.g. "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen.

Also - although it doesn't literally exist as a place, "From the Underworld" by the Herd is a psychedelic pop classic (though only a minor hit) and quite true to the original Greek myth of "Orpheus and Eurydice" too. Get the feeling the Verve were influenced by it ?- even the name of the band is a bit similar.

V Van Dieman's Land - U2. That's the old name for Tasmania, Australia. (Official name change in 1856) . There are quite a lot of songs about the place , with other titles too, as many political activists from UK/Ireland were deported there by the British government. (Clip on YouTube)

Think it's in Kansas. Another one written by Jimmy Webb.

X Xanadu - Olivia Newton-John and the ELO.
Also Dave Dee, Dozy , Beaky, Mick and Tich had singles chart success with "Legend of Xanadu".
It is situated in Inner Mongolia. Rather unexpectedly, the Summer capital of the Yuan dynasty Mongol empire under Kubali Kahn, inspired TWO number one UK hits!
For younger readers - Olivia was sort of a prototype version of Kylie.... and DDDBM&T also recorded the Millers 60's warm-up tune "Hold Tight"

or... "Adventures in a Yorkshire landscape" by Be Bop Deluxe. They were a 1970s band, led by guitarist Bill Nelson - quite liked them. (Clip on YouTube)

Z Zanzibar - Billy Joel (Again). The song is about a drinking den that is named after the semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania, East Africa. You can drink alcoholic beverages there too.
