N (The) NEW STATESMAN -political satire sitcom , written by Lawrence Marks and Maurice Gran, starring Rik Mayall , as the corrupt, maverick, Thatcherite MP, Alan B'stard. First shown on Yorkshire TV in 1987. Often hilarious, and turned out to be very prophetic!

O - Open All Hours. Four series between 1976 and 1985. Ronnie Barker, David Jason, Lynda Baron. Set in a corner shop in Balby. Mischieviously the characters of Arkwright and Granville have been likened to people at NYS.

In one episode Godber , played by Richard Beckinsdale, mentioned the Millers FA Cup win over Aston Villa in 1968 at Villa Park. (I was at the match).

Q QUEENIE'S CASTLE - Yorkshire Television Leeds council estate sitcom, starring Diana Dors as Queenie Shepherd . Scripts written by Keith Waterhouse. . First broadcast in 1970. The blocks of flats, where most of the filming was done, were subsequently demolished.

"When I was up in court and Villa looked like doing well in the cup, I prayed
But I don't know, it didn't seem to work out
I got probation and Villa lost to Rotherham one nothing."

R - Rab C. Nesbitt. BBC Scotland comedy series that originally ran from 1988 to 1999 with a second series from 2010 to 2014. Gregor Fisher played the title role of an alcoholic Glaswegian.

S SOME Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em - from the 70's starring Michael Crawford and Michele Dotrice. Enjoyed them when they were first on but the last time I saw some I found them to daft to laugh at.

I honestly could not stand it. A few seconds of watching the Crawford character drove me screaming from the TV. No sensible woman could have put up with that idiot.

U UP Pompeii - Frankie Howerd as Lurcio. Broadcast 1969 just 2 series and a couple of spin offs.
Always wondered if this was inspired by the musical A Funny Thing happened On The Way To The Forum? In the original Broadway production Zero Mostel played the lead as Pseudulos the scheming slave in Rome but Frankie Howerd took on the role when it moved to London in 1963.

I've not seen where it is but it possibly had something to do with it.

V - The Vicar of Dibley. BBC sitcom released in three series from 1994 with a number of specials. Dawn French in the title role.

W WAITING For God - Stephanie Cole and Graham Crowden starred in this sitcom about a retirement home in Bournemouth. It was mildly amusing at times.

We'll travel onto Y then!

Y YES Minister and YES Prime Minister - didn't actually watch these first time round but have seen them since. Starred Paul Eddington, Nigel Hawthorne and Mr Derek from Basil Brush. The first series was at the start of the 80's the 2nd one towards the end of the 80's.
