Carrying on from Lindum's Olympics I thought we'd try Paris as it's the next Olympic City. Anything at all to do with Paris - even the French language - people, teams etc

A ARRONDISSEMENTS - In 1795 Paris was originally divided into twelve arrondissements or municipal districts. During Napoleon III's reign more were added and there are now twenty.

B - Bois de Boulogne. A large public park that forms the western half of the 16th arrondissement. It is a remnant of the ancient oak forest of Rouvray.

D - Disneyland Paris. Actually located about 20 miles east of the city but it's called Disneyland Paris on the brochure!

E EIFFEL Tower - designed by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Universal Exposition.

Once lost the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Got on the underground from the centre of the city and got off at the Tower stop. Looked around and it wasn't to be seen (I mean, this is massive!) Walked into the middle of the road, glanced over my shoulder and there it was! The French drivers are very intolerant of English women standing in the middle of the road pointing!

G GRAND-PALAIS - built for the 1900 World Exhibition of Paris. Because of the way it was constructed water got in and erosion took place and eventually in 1993 one of the glass ceiling panels fell and the main space was closed until 2007 when it was eventually restored.

Reminds me a bit of the Crystal Palace in London.

J JARDINS de Paris - Paris has a lot of green spaces, the two most famous and oldest are the Tuileries Garden and the Luxembourg Garden. The newest is the Promenade des Berges de la Seine which was made in 2013.

K - Place Kossuth. A rather nondescript intersection in the 9th arrondissement named after Lajos Kossuth a hero of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution.

... or KOENIG'S MONUMENT (Monument du General Koenig) sculpture tribute to one of the leaders of Free French liberation movement, who fought against the Nazi occupiers in the 1940's. The monument is in a park next to Porte Maillot. (Haven't visited it).

L LOUVRE - museum that has many masterpieces. Been to Paris a few times and never managed to get in - been round it and you can see some of the exhibits in windows (though, I suspect, not the real ones?) Still on my bucket list.

Been a couple of times. A few things I wanted to see were closed off and couldn't get near the Mona Lisa because of a great scrum of tourists and students.

M - Monmartre. Artistic quarter. Only been in daytime to see the church of Sacre-Couer on the hill top. If you stand still for a moment somebody wants to draw you (for money of course!)

Yes, only been to the outside too - up all those steps.

N NOTRE Dame - mediaeval Cathedral and is where Victor Hugo's Hunchback lives, though, I've never seen him. I saw that it was to re-open after the fire in 2019 late this year.
