A-Z of Painters and Paintings

R - Raphael (1483-1520). Italian painter of the High Renaissance often considered as one of the holy trinity of the period with Leonardo and Michelangelo.

T - Titian (1488-1576). Most important painter of the Renaissance in Venice. Bacchus and Ariadne is in the National Gallery. I have a copy but my wife doesn't like it. :(

V - Diego Velazquez (1599-1660). Leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age. His painting known as The Rokeby Venus in the National gallery was attacked in 2023 by Just Stop Oil protestors.

W John WONNACOTT - London born artist who trained at the Slade School of Fine Art (I don't think this had anything to do with Noddy Holder). He painted pictures of the Royal Family and John Major which were more colourful than the usual portraits of them you see.

X - Jean Xceron (1890-1967). Born in Greece but emigrated to USA in 1904. Considered a pioneer of the 'non-objective' painting movement. I have no idea what that is!

Y YOUNG Girl Standing Against A Background Of Wheat - another Van Gogh. Not sure about the wheat they look more like poppies to me!

Ah, yes, Caz but in the days before mass use of chemicals wheat fields were dotted with cornfield annuals such as poppies, cornflowers, corn cockle and corn marigold. I went past an organic wheatfield in Dorset and it was a fantastic sight full of red, blue and yellow flowers in the crop. Lost times I'm afraid. Mainly gone along with wildflower meadows.

Z - Johan Zoffany (1733-1810). German neoclassical painter who worked a lot in England and has paintings in several collections including National Gallery and Tate.
