A-Z of Highways in Song Titles

Lindum - I have a couple of early Horslips albums on vinyl (not that track though). Got several Talking Heads albums too.

Alternative "N" - New STREET Blues" by Gerry Rafferty (again, see entry for "B"), from the album "Can I have my money back?".(1971). I have always found New Street staiton in Birmingham fairly depressing, but I don't think the song is aboutt that.

O On the ROAD again - Bluesy hit for US rock band , Canned Heat. (1968). Reached number 8 in the UK singles chart .
Motorway Madness was atypical of their work and pretty mediocre. I am now confused as the LP has a date on it of 1977 - which fits my recollection much better than 1989. It's possible that I got it as an import as I had friends who ran a record shop back then and supplied various 'specials'.

Lindum- that Horslips track appeared on the "Tracks from the Vaults" compilation (1989), but having checked, that record seems to be a re-issue of the same (or similar) compilation from 1977. I don't remember seeing those compilations on sale in the UK though, so they could be imports. Never saw them play live, and I would have gone if they had been playing in my local area at the time.

... Alternative "P" - "Penny LANE", one of the best known songs by the Beatles . Reached number 2 in the UK singles chart in1967. I have been to Penny Lane (Liverpool) and a lot of the stuff mentioned in the song was still there. Think Caz said that she had been there too. The B-side was "Strawberry fields forever" - been to that fairly nearby location too.

R - Road Runner. Song by Jonathan Richman first released as a single in 1972 and then as a track on the 1976 LP, The Modern Lovers. Quite a complicated recording history with some versions credited to Richman, others to his band, The Modern Lovers. I have the LP. Video on YouTube.

Think I have several versions of "Roadrunner" on various albums/compilations.

... or... "Tobacco ROAD"... semi-autobigraphical song from US Country singer-songwriter John D. Loudermilk, which was a UK hit for the British group, the Nashville Teens (1964). Reached number 6 in the UK singles chart. Many other singers/bands have recorded their versions of the song, including a well-known rendition from US rock and blues performer, Edgar Winter. There are also versions by Spooky Tooth, Jefferson Airplane, Suzi Quatro , etc (Not Bjork yet though , as far as I know!).

U Unity STREET - song from Ian Page and Bop (2012). Soul-influenced pop song from the ex-frontman of mod-revival band , Secret Affair. Clip on YouTube.

V - Victory Road (We Stand Tall) is a 2024 single - described as a power anthem - by RedemptionRising. Presumably a religious ditty to which I have not listened.

... or ... "Ventura HIGHWAY" by US band, America. UK minor hit single in 1972. It's a bit Neill Young-ish. Quite like it. Ventura is in California, USA.

W Working on the ROAD - bluesy song from British rock band Ten Years After, (1970). Clip on YouTube
