A-Z Historical TV Series

R Robin Hood - BBC tv 2006, with Jones Armstrong in the title role. The well-known tv series from the late 1950's , which starred Richard Greene, was called "The Adventures of Robin Hood". so qualifies for this thread as an "A", not an "R". There was also the spin-off "M"- Maid Marian and her Merry Men", first broadcast as a BBC1 children's show in 1999, written by and starring Tony "Baldrick" Robinson , with Kate Lonergan as Maid Marian

Had a similar problem with the 1950s Lancelot, Mike, as it's called The Adventures of Sir Lancelot. Shame as I used to enjoy it. Starred William Russell who is still with us at 97.

Alternative R - Richard the Lionheart, ran on ITV 1961-63. Enjoyed it at the time but ahistorical and a bit daft! Richard played by Irish actor Dermot Walsh.

You can't beat Richard Greene as Robin Hood though can you! Although Jonas Armstrong was OK!

S Shogun 1980 miniseries with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune. I thought it was very good at the time. From the bestseller by James Clavell. Set in Japan around 1600.

What a cast. Richard Greene, Archie Duncan as Little John, Alexander Gauge as Friar Tuck, Alan Wheatley super as the evil sheriff and two divine Marians - Bernadette O'Farrell and later Watch With Mother's Patricia Driscoll. Oh to be in Sherwood!

Alternative U - Upstairs, Downstairs ITV 1971-75 with Jean Marsh, Gordon Jackson, Simon Williams and Lesley-Anne Down among others. Really enjoyed it.
