A trip down memory lane: Osvaldo Ardiles

Isn’t it crazy to think that Ossie is 67 years old today? A World Cup winner from Cordoba in Argentina who is still a great ambassador for our club. Ossie played football the right way, with his intricate passing game, whilst working his socks off (or at least until they were around his ankles).

Ossie and his countryman Ricky Villa brought the Latin style to the English game. He entertained us in the eighties playing alongside greats like Glenn Hoddle in a team that won domestic and European trophies. A man who had his own dream and sung it with a couple of Rockney music legends.

Even when 2 countries were at war, our fans held up the banner “You can keep the Falklands, we’ll keep Ossie”. We also shouldn’t forget his acting debut in Escape to Victory alongside Pele, Moore, Sly Stallone and Harry Kane’s dad Michael around the same time.

Finally, a man who later came back to WHL as manager and had the audacity to launch the famous five when everyone else played 4-4-2 – Teddy, Klinsmann, Barmby, Anderton and Dumitrescu. OK, that bit didn’t go so well.

So close season is always a great time to reminisce – happy birthday to our legend, Ossie !!!

Great post mutters , wonderful memories . Wasn’t that just the most amazing time . Hoddle and Ossie , trembly knees like no other other . Happy birthday to our Tottingham legend .
Watching him float across the pitch was just amazing , skipping tackles , causing chaos . Brilliant

Didn’t know Harry's dad was in that film . Where did you dig that up from . If that isn’t a piece of trivia for a quiz night !

I remember the excitement when those signings were announced. The shock even. World Cup winners coming to Tottenham. The fever reverberated through the rest of the close season. Our opening game was away to Nottingham Forest. At a conservative estimate there were 11,000 Spurs fans in the ground. Thousands more, it seemed, outside the ground. I remember Brian Clough saying how great it was for football. And then the ticker tape reception at our first home against Villa, which in true Spurs style we managed to lose 4-1.

Due to living in Scotland and immigrating to Australia I was never blessed to see Ossie play live.

I did however see him in Sydney, when Spurs played Sydney FC a few years ago. He graced us with his presence by walking around the stadium waving to 70,000 Spurs fans and 3000 Sydney fans.

Such a legend. On paper that team of the late 70's was unbeatable. On the pitch however, we were very beatable.
