A reckoning is coming

This is going to be a crucial week of training with the team for new head-coach Vitor Matos.

With three defeats in the seven days after a two week International break, one where O’Dea took charge and Matos watched on and two of which he took charge proper, there has been hardly any time on the training field with the players

Those defeats have been moral sapping for players and fans alike and to concede eight goals in the process (3-0, 2-1, 3-2) just rubbed our noses in it.

It has been a dramatic seven days in charge for Matos, who is still without his coaching team, Tozé Mendes, Diogo Medeiros and Goncalo Ricca, waiting for work permits at the time of writing.

How he is expected to wave a magic wand and turn these players of weak constitutions and seemingly little skill into match winners in a week is mind boggling..

The precarious position we now find ourselves in is down to CEO Tom Gorringe together with Global Head of Recruitment and Analytics Adam Worth, who took over after the departure of Director of Football, Richard Montague in September. Worth oversees the club's recruitment and strategy, while Gorringe is responsible for contract negotiations.

This season after appointing then sacking inexperienced head-coach Alan Sheehan he then goes on to appoint another inexperienced head-coach in Vitor Matos.

Only time will tell how the latter high risk appointment works out but with the team currently in free fall, Matos has a huge task on his hands to turn things around.

A seasoned, charismatic Championship manager with plenty of experience in this hugely competitive league should have been the go to appointment to get us out of the mess we find ourselves in.

Does Matos have the time, the motivational skill, the tactical nous and the wherewithal to get us back on track? We had all better pray that he does, the consequences of failure are inconceivable.

For me, it's a pattern of poor staff recruitment, going back as far as Watson who then brought in Sheehan.

Sheehan hang around working with Duff and then Luke Williams - he should have been let go - I believe Williams wanted him gone as Sheehan was under-mining up and going over his head and was pally with the owners and Coleman.

It was a weird move right from the start, Duff should have been able to bring in his own staff to work with.

What they saw in Sheehan I'll never know, we were well aware what his footballing philosophy was and even more so when he delivered a presentation at the fans' forum that was mostly about off the ball work.

The summer window looked good on paper in the Summer and there were hopes of a good season and a top half finish at least.

After the window, we sacked almost the entire recruitment team including Montague and a few others.

Critically now we haven't replaced Montague with a proper experienced football man at the top and it's costing us.

The Matos appointment is a random one to say the least. He may well prove to be an excellent coach but the situation with his assistants is absolutely farcical. A shambles.

The owners have done a lot of great work on the commercial side, trying to raise our profile with Snoop Dogg and Modric but it could soon matter for nothing if we're in League One.

But it's a different story on the pitch with so many really bad appointments being made.

Starting with Watson who brought in Duff and Sheehan (as far away from Swansea City type football as you can get), then Coleman as chairman.

They brought in Montague and others to oversea recruitment and got rid of the lot, it seems soon realising they weren't up to the job.

Now the owners haven't replaced Montague leaving it up to a commercial guy to head up football matters.

We thought we'd finally got rid of some really awful owners. These new ones clearly care but it's also clear they don't know how to properly run a football club.

It can't be run properly by people with zero experience of it.

Realistically if the club recruited well over the last couple of years how long would them recruits last here? It’s nearly impossible for the club to retain competent staff due to circumstances out of the decision makers control and there’s only so many good decisions you can make before you make 1 bad one where it all unfolds, in the PL it was Summer 2016 and in the Championship it was summer 2023. If Matos turns out to be a miracle worker, saves us this season and then has a good start next season clubs will start to circulate and we’re back to where we are now (think Luke Williams West Brom rumours). I’m not defending the decision makers, I just don’t see a solution for them.

If we recruited well, the players would be sold for profits which a % could be re-invested in the squad so we can continue to perform well on the pitch.

Same with staff/coaches.

So that's why decisions of recruitment of staff is so critical for us.

Yet we've messed up so many. Far too many going way back to Watson coming in.
