A Poem To Honour Ron, As He Is Laid To Rest

People outside the world of Villa won't understand what a privilege this was . Being asked to write a poem for our greatest ever captain to read at our greatest ever managers funeral.
Wow.

Agreed mate. Was very humbled and totally chuffed to be asked.

I have done a little blog on it, more getting the message out, as per my usual mantra, things don't have to be perfect to get things done in life.

But I likened it, for the non initiated, to Becks asking a fan to write something for Sir Alex.

Lovely tribute Jon

I am sure that there are plenty of 'bards' in the Villa family and I think that it would be good to see if we could put together a book of poems as a tribute to Ron and other Villa greats that could be sold with all proceeds going to dementia charities. My dear old dad (HEITS) suffered badly with dementia and I try to do as much to support the charities where I can. Let's not forget that Dean Smith's dad is suffering with this condition as we speak.
So get your creative juices flowing and let's see what can come up with. Here is my contribution;

Beneath the clock at Highbury
The Villa faithful stood
The anticipation was so immense
We all felt that we could...

Saunders had built the team
That took us to that place
And treated it as just his job
With few smiles upon his face.

When asked if it was over
One night at Villa Park
"Do you want to bet against us?"
Was his challenging remark.

We didn't win at Highbury
But the defeat it mattered not
'Cause Ipswich lost to Boro
And Villa finished top

A rarity was witnessed
At the Council House and on the bus
Saunders finally raised a smile
As he showed the cup to us

So rest in peace our hero
We were sad to see you go
But listen out on matchdays
For "Yippee aye eh, yippee aye oh"

For Ron from Claret and Blue Blood - thanks for the memories.
