But in all competitions, including the Football League Trophy it was:

Objectively - I don't know.
Subjectively - We must be. This is the period back in the day when the wheels fell off, the canopy blew away and a pack of wolves ate the horses.

On this date in 1983 we had dropped to third place, four points behind leaders Cardiff but with three games in hand. We were three points behind Portsmouth in second with one game in hand.
Top three went up in those days. We were two points ahead of fourth-placed Huddersfield with a game in hand.
So it all came down to needing points from games in hand.
1983 – played 28, won 17, drawn 4, lost 7, points 55
2021 – played 28, won 17, drawn 5, lost 6, points 56

Don't worry, Sam Long can play centre forward.
Just been reading Grant, Jackson and Scully are 50/50 for tomorrow night's match.
With 6/7 injuries in 82/83 you would have guaranteed that 50/50 was a euphemism for definite starter.
Says something about how well the squad has been constructed, that should none of those play, we still have round pegs to put in round holes, due to recruiting players that can do a good job in more than one position.
It's not ideal but Sam Long is unlikely to be given the number 9 shirt.

CB - Montsma or Eyoma or Roughan or Poole
Midfield Three - Jones, Sanders, McGrandles, Brennan, Howarth, Edun
Forward Three - Hopper, Rogers, Brennan, Howarth
Next step would be to recruit players that can play more than one position at the same time!
