Could five Britons be among the first men on Mars? Space hopefuls shortlisted for controversial one-way mission

Four women and a man from the UK are among the final 100 candidates for the Mars One Project which plans to set up a permanent human settlement on the planet by 2024.

She said: "Human space exploration has always interested me so the opportunity to be one of the people involved was really appealing. The future of humanity is in space.

"My family is pretty thrilled. They're really happy for me. Obviously it's going to be challenging, leaving Earth and not coming back. I've had support from my friends and family and we can still communicate via the internet."

Ms Earnshaw said she was "not surprised" by scepticism surrounding the project. Last year researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology reportedly found that any manned mission to Mars would result in the crew dying after 68 days,

So they could only last 68 days on Mars if they get there :10: sorry but i am space mad but there is surely a better way than just sending some humans off to shortly die off on Mars, 2024 this is supposed to happen,,,what do you think? :10:

Just a bit ay PMSL, ffs is it just me or 68 days ay really that long to enjoy being stuck inside pods and a space helmet on a foreign planet, can they get out and about i wonder and explore on buggies of somekind, i would wait until the last week before i would die and take the buggy out and drive as fast as i can taking all the other astronauts oxgen tanks and a message saying ''sukerz''

I just hope they're not all posh t*ats, to see a normal person go on such a journey would be worth so much more than a bunch of public school elites, we see enough of them in 99 percent of the media already.

Scred me when i read the bit that said ''My family is pretty thrilled. They're really happy for me'' fook me if mt family said that i would tell em to oizz off lol

I dont suppose we can send 5 unemployed people or 5 child molesters, Gary Glitter in the driving seat.

What a novel way to rid the earth of all the shit, how big a space craft do we need to get shot of Isis and Small Heath?

Makes you laugh when euthanasia is illegal yet we are quite willing to sacrifice young able bodies in the name of science.

Hey are Col dude great experiment for mankind to use the sick ba**ads for our own advances, it would be funny when they set the reality tv show cameras for this mars mission there was some feckin evil alien creatures on there lol

I always used to say 'they weren't selling tickets to the moon so The U.S (now) would have to do for the ex. Can't they take him to Mars instead. I would pay.

Seriously though, I know I want to stop the world and get off at times, however that's pushing it. It could be used as another modern way of starting a new Australia by sending the criminals there

A scientist was on the BBC breakfast show saying the science behind this project is non existent, they asked the organisers of this space project sending humans to mars how they would cope with space radiation and stopping the muscles waisting away for 5 or 6 months on the journey to Mars and he said they have not come up with answers, he reckons it is impossible and NASA is still working out how we could send humans to Mars yet this company is doing it??

There's a rumour that NASA & The Vatican have been working together to find away to announce life has been found on Mars!
