Despite winning 5-2 away at the (then) Britannia Stadium results elsewhere combined to send Manchester City into the third tier of English football for the first time in their history. Years of failure and struggle had led to this point so other results elsewhere in the league simply provide the context - the club only had to look itself in the mirror to identify where the real responsibility lay.
David Bernstein, City's Chairman at that time, outlines in this article how this turn of events was immediately seized upon as an opportunity to revamp the club and how the actions taken at that time sowed the seeds for the success we have been privileged to enjoy. There were dark days to follow as the Blues struggled to come to terms with lower league football - as Christmas approached and City struggled against York City away from home even the most stalwart City fans began to doubt where the future of the club would lie. Those feelings returned the following spring when City were 0-2 down against Gillingham in the League Two Play-Off final and the full-time whistle approached....... then up popped Kevin Horlock and Paul Dichov and the rest, as they say, is history. Sky Blue heroes.
I have a lot of time for Bernstein - as one of the comments notes, he played a large part in helping to restore the club's dignity and pride during a very challenging period.
An interesting read.
What can you remember of the time when City faced their darkest days?
