3 at the back

With Scott returning is this an option?
Wilson on the right,Waterfall in the middle and Wharton on the left?
Thoughts?
Would allow Eardley and whoever plays on the left to push on and help the attack?

Said it last year when we were linked with Magri who was sort of a right sided CB. Could give you three big fellas + Akinde/Rhead for set pieces too, lots of chances of mismatches!

Don't think we will do if we're not trying it now though and not sure the Cowleys have tried it anywhere else.

I think we'd have more than 4 players capable of forming a back 3 if it was plan A. It's an option though.

I'm sure they'll use it sometimes. I think with the newer players one thing they'll be looking for is more options tactically. Previously it's been maximizing what they have but they don't seem the types to stick at that - they're not doing all the video analysis stuff just to keep deciding which defender to target with the long ball up to Rhead.

I like the back 3 idea with two quick wing backs but would be surprised if we started at Northampton with it, I suppose the Boston and Scunny games will tell if it is bein g considered as it has to be tested in friendlies first

Never liked 3 at the back. Unless players are very tactically adept, with nous and pace in the back 3 and 2 very willing wing backs, it rarely works for long. Even if you have them, if one is injured there is unlikely to be a like for like replacement. The opposition will find space in behind at some point.
I don't think the Cowleys will go for this. Too much of a change in method. Stick to a solid base of a back 4. Then work on either 4-4-2; 4-3-3 or even 4-2-3-1.
