2026 Summer Transfer Window Thread

I was being sarcastic
Exactly - Wood had one bad season at Newcastle - it didn’t make him a bad player!
The same can be said for Reijnders at City. He was brilliant for Milan the previous season.
For the record - I would pay the transfer fee - but agree the wages are prohibitive and makes any deal very unlikely
Pep would have had a substantial influence in his transfer to Man City, to suggest he’s a bad player would be like calling Pep a mug. Man City have such a surplus of talent, that they can allow very talented players to leave. This means players have to hit the ground running OR keep the bench warm. This makes it particularly difficult for foreign players to settle. You could say that we’ve seen similar with Kali, Ndoye and Bakwa. Contrast that with Wood who didn’t really pull up any trees in his first season, leading to “his shit” assessment from some of our fanbase. Wood WAS given time.

One bad season for city and Reindeer has become a bad player? I don’t think so. I have no strong view as to whether he’s worth the money, what I do know is any player who comes to us, faces a tough crowd.

We have been over this times many.

The number of players who make an instant impact when signed in the January window are in few and far between.

The best transfer activity in that window is, more often than not, no activity.
Yes, we have been through this many times and the point is fundamentally flawed

Moreover, the whole point, when looked at objectively, makes no sense.

You can absolutely argue that clubs tend to make poor transfer decisions in January. That is a fair point and the brevity of the window can lead to that, alongside clubs being reluctant to let players go

But in recent years we have literally seen impact.

Last season West Ham completely turned their season around in January, from dead and buried to going down with the highest points total in a decade, because of the signings of Disasi and Taty

Forest in 2023 signed three key players- Navas, Felipe and Wood. Wood made a huge long term rather than short term impact due to injury, but without the other two we would have been relegated.

A casual glance through the January transfers shows that most clubs did virtually no business anyway

Of those that did, you cannot reasonably argue that Semenyo at Man City did not make an immediate impact, given he scored plenty of goals (including a cup final winner) and neither can you say that of Guehi

Connor Gallagher certainly made an impact at Spurs and played a key part towards the end of the season in keeping them up

Rayan came into Bournemouth and scored 5 PL goals in 12 starts, with 7 overall contributions. That's an instant impact.

Nilson Angulo at Sunderland was only 22 and managed 500 minutes from right midfield- hard to tell impact I guess

Oscar Bobb, Tammy Abraham (2 goals) and the two at Palace are the only 8 figure transfers that window that clearly more was expected from and didn't make an impact, alongside Pablo at West Ham- which was an outright dodgy piece of business anyway

It's an easy canard to throw around but not especially backed by the facts of the last window

The point is not fundamentally flawed.

Less than 50% of players signed by PL clubs in the January window play with any level of regularity; only a a very small fraction of those make a season transforming impact.

If you think most of the tenuous instances listed above were season transforming fine; I dont.

The January window is nothing more than a convenient excuse for the knicker wetting brigade to complain, and that wont change anytime soon.

He was a great player in Serie A BUT hes badly struggled in EPL

Entirely different demands and styles of play

All the warning signs are there that he isnt physical enough or suited to EPL

Weve made this mistake before with serie a players more than once

Sell em all at this point, why the heck not
It's all talk like 99% of any transfer or interest posted on the tinterweb.
We must expect attention to our better players. Juventus aren't the club they were and we have far more financial muscle than them and probably every other Italian team.

In that half season.

How many players coming into the Premier League for the first time make a season transforming impact at all?

You are asking for a pretty high bar there.

If you are asking for transformative impact, how many clubs signed a player like that in the summer?

Man City signed Cherki and Semenyo in each window

Bournemouth signed Kroupi

Xhaka at Sunderland

I suppose Calvert-Lewin at Leeds

Now I'm struggling

If you are just asking about playing time, the same point applies. Lots of players take 6 months or more to start playing regularly, especially if coming from outside the Premier League. Adaptation takes time. Many are not signed for immediate impact at all anyway - we signed Netz, who looked excellent when he played, but was brought in for cover, competition and to develop over time

If you think most of the tenuous instances listed above were season transforming fine; I dont.
Like I said, how many clubs in the Premier League were transformed by a signing, outside of the promoted clubs signing whole new teams?

Not sure how you claim Semenyo or the West Ham ones were anything but to be honest

The January window is nothing more than a convenient excuse for the knicker wetting brigade to complain, and that wont change anytime soon.
Did the Cognoscenti inform you of that opinion? Did you not think to actually check through the transfers to see if it held water first?

I can’t be the only one who’s not ready to write this lad off. Did very well in Italy and as another poster has said he’s got goals in him. If we can get him playing and used to the fact he doesn’t have as much time as he’s used to he could be an important player. I’ll get my tin hat on but as long as he’s in blue I’ll want him to do well

"Scott mctominay too did well in Italy
Italian league is weak and it’s now a retirement home"

(A bit of positivity at least to start with on city forum today on Reijnders)

Hes just had an assist and scored in a friendly as well. But City fans saying its because it was an exhibition match and he had time and space he doesnt get in EPL

£55m on Reijnders is too much. If we have that sort of money to spend on one player it shouldn’t be for him. I would prefer it be spent on a forward player.
This is my sticking point. If we are interested in him, he is 28 so for a club of our size £55m is a lot of money given that we are highly unlikely to make our money back from him.

£35m and reasonable wages and I would be largely ok with it but that sort of fee is for someone younger in my opinion.

McTominay was one of very few players to emerge with any credit in his last two seasons at Man Ure. It was a failure at management level that saw him leave and it was no surprise when he did well in Italy.

Yeah I mean I doubt it happens full stop but especially at that price…

We all thought MGW was gone this time last year though so you never know.

Reijnders at £55m is way too much for a 28 year old with little or no resale value.
I'm sceptical that we are really in for him.

I just can’t see us paying that for a 28 year old. I have no doubt that we will start throwing money around soon but I would be very surprised if any of it was spent o Reijnders.

He was signed for £46m last season and hasn’t increased his value. A bid of £40m still represents a PSR neutral deal for them and reflects that he hasn’t increased that value

Maybe add ons for 100 appearances, a cup, euro qualifying can get the fee to £45 and their money back

No way we should go to £55m
