Thinking back to the days when life in this ONCE great country was much more simple and mates and me standing on the Shoreham kop would heartily sing to plod standing on the pitch , "Harry Roberts is our friend, he kills coppers!", plus "Who,s that copper with the helmet on, Dixon, Dixon of Dock Green!, On the beat all day, on the wife all night!" As a young teenage idiot it was all part of the joy of being on the kop and the brill atsmosphere. Before segregation, many rucks with opposing teams fans inc. Man U, Liverpool, Everton, Leeds and ofcourse THE PIGS, "All Together Now, You,ll Never Take The Shoreham!" We knew where we stood back then because abuse a single copper anywhere out on the street, in town etc. and it,s dragged by the ear to the nearest cop box (Tardis) and it,s a f,,kin good hiding when you took your lumps and bumps then booted out into the street with no complaints, just excuses to explain the thick lip and black eyes, instant justice served! After a deserved good hiding inside the old Tardis at the bottom of West Street, face bloodied coat ripped, I told my old man that I,d fallen getting off the bus when pissed! Early well learned lessons attending The University Of Life stiill ingrained. Aged 17 and half, turned up at the Para Reg Depot Aldershot for basic training where intensive study of the real meaning of being tough began, talk about baptism of fire!! The University Of Life, The greatest seat of learning known to man!
