Tottenham expect Schalke will buy midfielder Nabil Bentaleb on a permanent basis for £16m in the summer.

Bentaleb is currently on a season-long loan at Schalke after falling out of favour under Maurico Pochettino at White Hart Lane.

It has been reported in Germany that his appearance in the Bundesliga club's 1-1 draw against FC Koln yesterday, triggered an option in the deal between the two clubs that will ensure a £16m transfer goes ahead at the end of the campaign.

Neither side has confirmed this is the case, but it is understood Spurs are prepared for his departure in the close season.

The Algeria international has impressed at Schalke, where he has played 26 times, scoring four goals and making four assists.

He joined Tottenham's Academy at the age of 17 in 2012 and made his professional debut a year later.

Mr Happy.... Bentaleb is not bloody awful... you and others so mistake clashes in personality, perceived favouritism and group-dynamics, as translating to lack of talent..

when Nabil 1st broke into the team under Sherwood's tenure, he was an outstanding prospect that even the likes of Juventus were keen on.... an excellent all-round midfielder well capable of attacking, defending and even playing LB well as I recall 2-3 seasons ago at Everton when we outplayed them in maybe our best performance that year..

16m in today's market is a steal.... hopefully, Nabil can take advantage of the cheap-deal to get top wages there..

Tottenham outcast is candidate for shock Bayern Munich move, reminiscent of Zidane
By Sport Witness Team -
8th March 2017

After breaking through over the previous two seasons, 2015/16 wasn’t great for Nabil Bentaleb at Tottenham. Managing just 168 Premier League minutes, Bentaleb struggled with fitness and clearly wasn’t doing enough to convince manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The midfield berths at Spurs were coming under greater competition, both defensively and more forward. Eric Dier began to have an impact and Dele Alli immediately showed that he’d be first team staple for the foreseeable future.

Pochettino added to his options with Victor Wanyama, Moussa Sissoko coming later, and Nabil Bentaleb became an outcast. With no real Tottenham future in sight, Bentaleb went on loan to Schalke followed by questions about his character.

Despite the German media trying to destroy him at the beginning, Bentaleb has been superb. Without a doubt one of Schalke’s best players so far this season and a real Bundesliga revelation.

Screen Shot 2017-03-08 at 13.30.39Schalke have recently taken their option to sign the Tottenham outcast permanently, but he could be leaving quickly if Lothar Matthaus gets his way.

The German football legend believes Bentaleb is a good candidate for Bayern Munich in the summer, and he praises the midfielder as much if not more than all of the other potential recruits: ‘He often reminds me of Zidane, who, like Bentaleb, has Algerian roots. Of course, the comparison is too high, but technically Bentaleb is in a class of his own.”

From being seen as a moody Tottenham player, on the fringe of Pochettino’s squad, Bentaleb now finds himself being recommended to Bayern Munich by Lothar Matthaus. Things have certainly changed.

Bentaleb is happy when everyone is singing his praises. He is useless when the going gets tough.

I think that view is a bit harsh, he is still quite young and perhaps had a bit of an attitude. Maybe he needed needed to move on to enable him to refocus. I just feel it's a shame as I believe he could have been a good squad player for us.

Classic prima donna syndrome. Pampered all through his life as the next superstar and faced with very few adverse situations.

When the going gets tough he sulks.

Not harsh. Unless reality is harsh.

16 Million for the summer kitty.

Lets hope we dont spunk it on Glenn Murray

have to say I totally disagree with that analysis...

He had to fight to be retained in our academy and had to work hard, and he was one of the hardest working kids in our academy, one of those that would just practice, practice and had to be told / forced to stop.

He came from a one parent family and had it tough, absolutely nothing has been handed to him, his big issue was getting so badly injured that it stopped his development stone dead and he took too long to recover his fitness, even when he went to Schalke he still wasn't fully fit - I'd say that he is the one Kid that Poch dealt with very badly when he was confronted by Nabil for not letting him go out on loan to get fit 6 months earlier - after that the relationship was always soured.

I can't change my view now, I rated Nabil and thought he had a lot of improvement in him still to come, he's not and never will be in Zidane's league, but he is going to be a top class player.

His performances in the games he played in just before he left completely soured my opinion about Bentaleb.

I'd say that it was up to Bentaleb to change MP's mind.

The single parent thing holds water. Empathy.

we announced on 24th Feb that we've reached agreement with Schalke:

So don't see how the Bayern thing could happen now? Ideally Bayern/someone else offer a lot more for him and we can break the agreement with Schalke but seems it might be too late.

Shame we couldn't make it work. Showed a lot of promise then fell out of favour. Something must have happened behind the scenes . I know he was injured and had a couple of bad moments but I didn't write him off for that. Good luck to him.

I know beyond any reasonable doubt that he and the coaches got on like oil and water when they turned down his request for an early loan move to get his fitness back,...after that he knew as well we did that he wasn't going to be allowed a way back...by all accounts it got really badly nasty.

So our coach's faults are:

1) Once your out there is no way back.

2) He is too conservative at times with his football.

I'm not so sure about the second, I'd say he prefers to create a solid base i.e. defensively as for the first it's said he has a voracious temper and once he's tripped, then he's unforgiving of the culprit(s), depending on what version of what story you'd care to listen ...

I still remember you coming back from holiday before he joined and the story you told us about the guy you met at the bar who said "with Pochettino, once you're out, you're out".
