Blackpool’s pre-season preparations continue with a behind-closed-doors friendly this Saturday, albeit against different opposition.

The Seasiders, who were originally due to play Newport County, will now come up against fellow Lancashire side Accrington Stanley.

A match report from the fixture will be uploaded to the official website after the game.

Meanwhile, the Club can also confirm that a Blackpool XI fixture against Bamber Bridge later this month (30 July) has, unfortunately, been cancelled.

Blackpool suffered defeat in their second pre-season encounter, in a behind-closed-doors friendly to Accrington Stanley.
The Seasiders slipped to a 3-1 loss, in a match which contained a mixture of both first-teamers and youth-team prospects.
Chris Maxwell was forced into an impressive early save in the opening ten minutes. Colby Bishop played a clever first-time ball into the path of Dion Charles, who was bearing through on goal, but Blackpool’s number one was there to block it away.

At the other end, Oli Sarkic was thread through on goal after a well cushioned header into his path, but the Blackpool forward couldn’t sort his feet out and the ball was eventually cleared before he could get a shot away.
With a little over ten minutes of the first-half to go in the baking heat, Dion Charles made no mistake when clean through on goal. A misjudgement from the backline allowed Charles to find the space and dispatch to give Stanley the lead.
Just minutes later, it was all-square. Demetri Mitchell, who was causing real problems on the right-hand-side, was brought down by the Accrington keeper. The referee awarded a penalty.
Mitchell stepped up and smashed the ball into the roof of the net, making the scores level at half-time.
Half-time: Accrington Stanley 1 Blackpool 1
The Seasiders found themselves behind ten minutes into the second half. A well-drilled free kick from Harry Pell was smashed into the corner from 25 yards out.
Despite chances at either end throughout the second half, the heat was proving a real test for both sides.
Josh Bowler did well on the right-hand-side to get to the byline and fire in a cross on 70 minuites, but no one in tangerine was there to prod it home.
As the match slowly drew to a close, Accrington grabbed their third of the game through Joel Mumbongo. The forward rounded off a good move and slipped the ball past Charlie Monks to seal the victory for John Coleman’s side.

Neil Critchley was pleased with the workout his players received in the pre-season friendly against Accrington.

Despite slipping to 3-1 defeat in the baking heat, the Seasiders blended a mixture of youth and experience in two 45 minutes sides, and the Head Coach was pleased with his side's effort at the end of a physically challenging week.

“We’ve had a physically tough week of training, and the test came at a good time for us. It was a challenging afternoon with the heat, but there were areas that were pleasing to see.

“You know exactly what you’re going to get from Accrington. That was probably their strongest starting XI that played the majority of the game, and we decided to mix our teams up. We’re only two weeks into pre-season, so it was a good 45 minutes for a lot of the lads.

“Fingers crossed everyone came through unscathed and we can look forward to another good week next week.”

One player who impressed once again in pre-season was Demetri Mitchell, who scored his second goal in as many games.

“He’s come back hitting the ground running and has really impressed us,” Critchley said.

“He had a strong end to the season and has brought it into pre-season so far. He won the penalty and dispatched it brilliantly, so we’re pleased to see positive performances from him and the squad.”

Interesting it doesn't tell us who played for us.
Pell was the player who we thought was going to join us from Cheltenham a few years ago.
Mitchell looked sharp last Sat and it appears he is enjoying a good pre season.
