Players that proved us wrong

I don't rate any player, until they put on a Gills top 🙂
Despite watching loads of games, I admit i know virtually nothing about most of the players that don't play for us. I barely watch the opposition team players at all. I couldn't tell you any of the Lincoln players last night for example. I've been known to turn up on a Saturday without even knowing who we're playing to be honest.

When we do sign a player i usually know nothing about the. What I do know, I read from WIkipedia. That's probably why I just don't judge them before they play for us.

I've been to games where I don't know who we're playing too, and also where I am... lol But yeah, agree with everything you said, as I do the same 😊

I thought Cody Macdonald was poo the first few weeks after being loaned to us. Couldn't hit the proverbial barn door and I was well pissed off as he had been offered to us to offset the loss of Simeon Jackson.

How wrong I was. I was never not one to shirk away from humble pie, and in his case, I ate it every time he scored (and learned to enjoy the taste after the first 15 goals).

A great fox in the box, first time around.

I always rated him. I thought he was harshly criticised. It seemed to be a common occurrence in those days that a CM was criticised if he wasn't Smudger, Saunders or Hessie.

Browning and later on Adam Miller also copped a lot of stick from the gills faithful - similar types of players I think.
Me too AK re Junior Lewis. Quality player.

He did a match saving interception in our goal area a few seconds before going up the other end and providing that cross.

I think a few changed their opinion on Junior Lewis based on one cross.

I don't think I've ever seen a gills player who was so good at some things and utterly hopeless at others.

His long passing and crossing was exceptional, but his touch was possibly the worst I've EVER seen from a professional. The amount of times the ball would just ping off him about 5 yards away to be intercepted was ridiculous. He also couldn't dribble whatsoever...

But then the passing and crossing!

Without a doubt, the weirdest player I've ever seen play for us

I found this in a much longer interview article about Peter Taylor.
Most underrated player

"Junior Lewis. He didn’t have such an influence at Hull City as he did when he was with me at Gillingham and Brighton but he was still the exact thing I wanted.

"He didn’t hide when things weren’t going well and that’s the reason I signed Junior the amount of times he did. He completely changed us at Gillingham and Brighton because he made us play football but he was still a lot, lot better at Hull than people give him credit for. He got some stick but he always contributed.

I was a huge Junior fan for that very reason MM.
My mates wouldn’t have it but I stuck to my guns.
I also remember telling them that Nyron was absolute quality and once again, they all took the piss ..... until he ended up in the top division.

Ha, yeh with JL, you just had to take the good with the bad!

Nyron was a funny one, when he started he was utterly hopeless up front. It doesn't really help that he was playing out of position in order to cover for one SBT moving to City...

... and then he started playing right back.

He was ridiculously good, he was without doubt the best athlete I've ever seen play for the Gills, and I LOVE an attacking right back, and his overlaps down the right wing were amazing. One game sticking out being the 4-3 win against Millwall at home when he scored the winner!

He also went and played up front for us in the last game of the season one year as we had no forwards, and to show just how much he'd come on as a player, went and scored two goals vs palace!

Similar with Ewan Roberts, I had high expectations of him 😒
I was on holiday in South Wales when we signed him.A few people on seeing my Gills shirts that fortnight told me how good he was and what a wonderful signing for Gillingham. I fell for it unfortunately so was extremely disappointed on seeing him play.

Dennis Oli was an impressive athlete, just a shame about his footballing ability. I do remember him scoring in a snow affected game and throwing himself into one of the snow drifts built up by the touchline to allow the game to go ahead. He was then pelted by snow balls by his team mates.

I remember my lad saying that Denis Oli was the hardest working crap player he’d ever seen.
I trumped him with Gary Mulligan 😁

The problem (in a good way) that Nyron had was that he was such and athlete he could almost play anywhere on the pitch which probably over the course of his career held him back a bit. Rather than nailing down a position and making that spot his specialist position he was used as a versatile utility man for a lot of his career.

That Palace game was brilliant.

Now that is a "crapiest headless chicken off". Oli or Mulligan?

Think Mulligan had more idea of what he wanted to try and do but not sure his execution was always the best. On the other hand I'm not convinced Oli ever knew where he was let alone what he was trying to do most of the time and even he looked surprised when things actually worked or he did something skillfull. Neither could be knocked for their work rate though. Put their work rate into JET and you'd have one hell of a player.

Against Millwall in the Championship was my favourite Nyron display. Absolutely epic 👍👍

I practically creamed myself over JET when I first saw him play and posted my adulation on this board. How wrong was that?

Have only approached being that wrong about the Gills in the last week when I posted my certainty that we'd be shit at Lincoln.

I have to say that my favourite Nyron game was West Ham at home in the championship. Nyron was marking Germain Defoe. Defoe got so frustrated because Nyron had him completely in his pocket that Defoe began fouling Nyron at every opportunity. The referee eventually sent Defoe off but he should have gone much earlier.

If Defoe had been playing for us and Nyron playing for West Ham Defoe would probably have been sent off in the first half.
