Vital 1st Team Regular
He can’t play ORF. I’m astonished that the Aussie doctor allowed him back on the field to renew his innings.
He’s paid a price ORF - but that price should’ve been so much higher.
ie Banned sine die
Can't change the rules going back, but I agree TPL that the rules should be clear that cheating like this is a lifetime ban. Same with the drugs cheats in athletics. Does make you laugh that the Aussies called for Broad to be slated on the tour for what (if I remember correctly) was one incident of not walking when he was given not out. Meanwhile going out armed with sandpaper seems to be deemed trivial in comparison with that, even though it seems to have been a team plan. Does make you wonder how many of the other Aussie team players were involved too. Three batsmen got punished, but the bowlers must have known what was going on, otherwise there was no point in doing it.
Takes two to tango KL and feel that I should add a couple of points which you may have missed in the past. The question of Broad being slated was largely paper talk here, it was a tiny minority who actually got on his back and it died a quick death, and rightly so.
You fellows would be familiar with what reverse swing is all about, and you may have noticed that it doesn't seem to be happening much any more, probably because it's caused mainly by tampering with the ball. Have you read former England opener Trescothics biography where he was in charge of shining the ball in a couple of the Test series? He finally settled with the use of mints in his saliva to shine the ball, against the rules of course. He was never found out. If you have followed Andrew Flintoff over the years (and he's a favourite of mine) he refers to Englands tactics at times and one of his expressions comes to mind "Don't be chucking your stones lads".
"Sandpapergate" seems to have put a halt to reverse swing for the moment but it will be back as soon as somebody finds a new way.
As I've mentioned before ball tampering has been here for yonks, but mainly not apprehended.
Not saying any team is more innocent than any others, but winning shouldn't be about which team can cheat best. The current cricket rules are ridiculous. Ok Australia did more, but wasn't the penalty according to the rules a ban for two or three games?
Smith ruled out of the third test.
