What is this Black Friday sh!t other than one more scheme to get consumers' dosh?

Should be renamed 'Get Rid of Your Old Stock Month.'
Another unwelcome US import that is all about the big corporate but does nothing for the small local trader.

Agree with Wayne plus it's another American import. Gross consumerism encouraging more waste and ultimately global warming and pollution.

I can't forgive them one of the others, young people saying "like" thousands of times out of context. I gather it comes from one of their sh#t "reality" programmes. I had to switch off a news item the other day as the interviewees were unable to construct a sentence without saying it several times.

Ah Steely Dan

Lyrics
When Black Friday comes
I stand down by the door
And catch the grey men when they
Dive from the fourteenth floor

When Black Friday comes
I collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out
I'll be on the road

When Black Friday falls you know it's got to be
Don't let it fall on me

When Black Friday comes
I fly down to Muswellbrook
Gonna strike all the big red words
From my little black book

Gonna do just what I please
Gonna wear no socks and shoes
With nothing to do but feed
All the kangaroos
etc

Whoa, Black Friday (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Friday (Bam-ba-Lam)

She's from Gillingham (Bam-ba-Lam)
Right next Rainham (Bam-ba-Lam)

or something

Surely the term "Black Friday" must imply some degree of racism? I am not allowed to have a "black coffee" only a coffee with our without milk for fear of offending someone who is not white. Cue a 1000 post thread from VG, 3x6 and Wayne amongst others.

I don’t bother with shopping normally, but the Black Friday sale on my Amazon Kindle was worthwhile when I had a look the other day(y)

For those who don't know, it's the Friday following Thanksgiving when Americans went shopping en masse and the stores turned a profit, ie went into the black. It wasn't characterised by sales and bargains, although no doubt that's crept in. In the States, it has some relevance; here none except to encourage spending.

There are those who have argued it is racist on the reasoning that Black Friday normaly contain a load of cheap bargins (or at least marketed as such) and is subtly implying that all black people are poor and can only afford cheapened items rather than full price stuff that white people can afford the rest of the year.

These people tend to be well off, privaledged white middle class women who have nothing better in their lives except to get offended at the word "black" while accusing others of anti-black sentiments.

I've never heard that. I also suffered people making up stuff years ago when I worked for he ILEA that you couldn't say "blackboard" or "white coffee". Total bollocks. As a leftie and someone who actually worked for the organisation I know that was crap. Sounds like another DM style urban myth.

Where are these people that apparently object to certain phrases? I've never met one either socially or in the Labour party. The long departed John Knee of this board used to come up with rubbish like this. Are you taking his place.

There are of course some words and phrases that are off limits fortunately, eg the "N" word. Are you lamenting not being able to use that?

"Ooh, it's gone too far now". I expect people were saying that when we abolished slavery.

As for being offended on behalf of others, yes I am, if someone is being, eg, sexist or racist. Should I just let it go because I'm a white man and it doesn't directly affect me? Extrapolating from here should we just allow others to be persecuted as it's nor our business?

Rant over.

Ps- is this another Piers Morgan wind up, the latest apparently being that we can't say Gingerbread man?

I have actually experienced the "it is coffee without milk" line a couple of times down the decades so there are people who apparently object to the phrase "black coffee" but the key thing with these "myths" is to realise they are usually isolated incidents rather than some company policy.

If you've not met anyone in the labour party who have made the Black Friday argument then clearly it is a made up lie as your small circle of comrades obviously represent the opinions of everyone in the world. If your friends haven't said something then obviously no one else has either

But going back on topic, it was an argument made in my company's internal Yammer group message board with links to various people's twitter posts, Facebook, reddit and all the other social media outlets where people get into their echo chambers. Fortunately most people just role their eyes at such arguments and don't take it too seriously. Most people who take offence to Black Friday do so because of crass over commercialism rather than the name.

I have also seen it debated internally whether or not the words blacklist and white list should be rebranded as a list that is white contains trusted people but the black one are untrustworthy and potential scammers. Those people were trying to get people to use "Trustlist" and "non-trustlist" instead. Didn't catch on.

As for Piers Moron, there was the story earlier this year of JL Bean bakery up north rebranding them as Gingerbread people and the story broke when the customer asked for a gingerbread man and was corrected and lectured that "people" was the correct gender neutral word. I don't think any of the main supermarkets sell as "gingerbread people" and have separate male and female designs and it seems to be individual owners here and there in their private businesses who make the decision to rebrand. It would not surprise me though if Gingerbread people was adopted by the main supermarkets in the next 5 years and some people may consider this progress.

I assume the above is what Piers was referring to. It amazes me that the people who seem to spend there time watching him are the people who always find everything he says offensive.

Political correctness is totalitarian.

Racism, sexism, homophobia and all other kinds of discrimination and prejudice must be challenged but political correctness is not the weapon to fight with; it will end up leading us into a worse place than we started.

It is unfortunate that the left-wing are blind to this. Yes, '58, of course you right that you should be offended on someone else's behalf if you encounter prejudice and discrimination. In fact, I'd go further, being offended on someone else's behalf aint enough, you need (I'm sure you agree) to challenge abhorrent views. Attempting to stifle hate-filled views with political correctness wont change people's prejudices and discrimination but will instead create an environment where debate becomes impossible.

It is a new fascism and, like all forms of fascism, it must be rejected and destroyed before it can take hold and spread like cancer across society.
