#COVID19

Hello Will, I come in peace, not looking for a fight just presenting a point of view. As a senior citizen I tend to see things in a different way to a lot of you. For instance at 19 years old I spent the year in North Africa and Egypt in the British Army, my choice, didn't drink or smoke, that was the only way I could see the world and by and large I enjoyed it. It certainly broadened my view. Since then I've learned to drink and smoke.
I didn't realize it at the time but I'm definitely an optimist and have realized that this has always coloured my thinking, perhaps explaining how we ended up in Oz. Perhaps paz is tarred with the same brush , I don't know.
And lastly I've got 9 adult grandchildren and I've always seen quite a lot of them, they seem to be able to make the best out of a situation.
Probably things are different over here, might be easier in some respects, again I don't know. (Except I do know about the weather )

Naturally I hope things work out for you lot but have serious doubts as Covid may spring more tricks yet.

Everyone’s different aren’t they and it sounds like given your teenage/early /20’s year, you had a vastly different experience so I can understand how and why you’re able to cope and perhaps even enjoy it. It’s good that you do! I wish I wasn’t as bothered by it ORF.

Problem is I work in quite a young, vibrant office with a lot of young professions and we’re all quite close and enjoy going out in what’s a tough demanding sector. Up until these restrictions were lifted it really was all work, no play. My work hours became longer and there was no respite and I know many of us felt the same.

Even when pubs opened, it wasn’t sociable. You pick your immediate friends to have a drink with on your own table with no socialising with anybody else and then you go home. For 18/19 year olds in the UK, they go to uni to socialse and meet new people. They can’t be expected to put all the time and effort into learning and ‘being the bright future’ when they’re then conditioned not to socialize with people. It’s not fair - I’m sure we’ve all got friends for life that we met through mixing when we were younger.

For women in their mid to late 20’s who’re single and want to meet someone and start a family given there’s a clock, there was next to no opportunity.

Regardless of pubs being open, having social distancing rules in place made life for me totally mundane and unnatural. I frankly hated it. Mentally it felt like having long Covid.

I get the virus is serious, I understand that it’s not gone away…. But it probably never will go away and I think what’s lacked throughout this pandemic has been a balance. The issues I’ve mentioned above I’ve never heard once from anybody in government. The reality is that we have a vaccine that’s probably done all we can do to control this virus. If after that there remains some deaths… then sadly that’s part of life. And I know, “easy for you to say - what about their families?”… but then what’s the answer? Life has to be worth living and Living in a masked socially distanced world forever isn’t living at all.

I hope it improves but I think we are where we are and if we can’t unlock and enjoy things 16 months later!!… then we simply never will.

A couple of questions.....

What happens if you get pinged by the U.K. Track and Trace thingy whilst in France? (Roaming charges may apply!!)
Second, are you quarantining when you get back?

The reason I ask is because I am hoping to get over late August/early September, and at the moment I don’t really know what the rules are.
From what I can see, it seems COVID is secondary to post Brexit border checks.
It always makes me a little nervous when things appear so straight forward in France, I know I am missing something.....

I’m going by boat (west channel crossings) as the dog will be coming with us....assuming the boats are back sailing passengers and not freight only. I guess you are flying, so maybe different at the border control, but I would definitely be interested in what you find.

OK.

It won't happen as all the people going will delete the app, at least whist there.

Second, are you quarantining when you get back?
At the moment, them's the rules, you can do a 'test to release' aprez 5 days; so for me it's only another 3 days' annual leave (travel back on a Saturday)
I'm hoping France will move back to amber in the next 3-4 weeks, so as fully vaxxed, quarantine requirement will be removed.
I believe many in cabinet have 2nd homes in France, so this is probably a cynical dead-cert ;-)

I know what you mean; the French can go all French at any time and just say non. if they shagged the wrong mistress that morning.

We are mixed, there are some of us flying, but two are EuroTunnel. Tunnel looks at the moment, to be the route of least resistance.

I will be interested to know how you go on, first hand experience is much better than the current situation of hoping I am right.

As you say I hope they put France back to Amber, I guess if Boris wants to visit his dad.....
That said, I work for myself, so quarantining is not an issue, nor is being stuck in France, ( I have wanted that to happen for 20 years) it’s being caught half and half because I missed something that concerns me.

My dog is 14, and whilst fit and healthy, the least stress I can put on her the better....I don’t want avoidable issues at the ports where she is then stuck in the car whilst it’s sorted......once in Brittany, nobody will find me!!

Good luck with the tunnel, a bloody nightmare at the best of times.

Bon Voyage

I quite like the tunnel.

Top tip, if you are driving on the motorways, get yourself a telepaege tag...

https://www.emovis-tag.co.uk/

They are next day delivery, and if you put your ferry booking no. in, I believe you get a discount. These are virtually no money and allow you drive through the paege with a gay abandon only the French possess, you then pay for what you have used the following month, via direct debit. It also covers you if you fancy driving over the Millau suspension bridge (recommended)

We are renting a large villa near Nimes, a bonne town called Uzès, and it's only a 2 hour drive (favourable wind) from the French gaff, so if it all goes merde, then I can hot-foot it there 'til the smoke clears.

I think im optimistic for sure, but by default that makes me angry due to the fact so many things could be better..

Mind you ORF, can you imagine it being back in world war 2 now, with the public AND the 'leader' as they are? Having to make decisions that affected the future of the entire world.. Its hard to imagine we'd have done very well.

So journalists who embarrass the government are going to be treated like spies & get 14 years in jail.

Who’s got the conetract for building prisons because there’s going to be a massive need for them very soon.

Well he was being asked to slow down by various scientific organisations so yea

I do wonder how on the one hand people say oh you cant blame boris for everything and on the other hand accept he is PM. Is there no accountability in this country at all? (Right it seems no there is not).

If he's responsible for any good ( Which I've yet to see one single moment of )

Then he needs to take ownership of the shit

Question for anyone who ever actually watches or listens to PMQs live or any of the press conferences.

Has Boris Johnson ever actually answered any question? I mean the question actually asked?

I like the tunnel, from the U.K.....getting back over from Calais always seems reminiscent of years gone by when the British were massing to get back home from the same region.

I have the SANEF tag, which I think is the same thing. You are correct it does make life so much easier.
Unfortunately, the first time I used it, it didn’t work on the Honfleur Bridge, resulting in a cacophony of car horns, and a panic stricken wife trying to wind the window down to pay. I enjoyed it though!!

Once over the bridge, the roads to Quimper are pretty much toll free and a pleasure to drive, if you ignore Caen and Rennes.

I should have already been there now, and not having to bother about how we travel, but COVID put paid to that, and things move on.
The next trip is to restart the process.

If I was you, I would head to the gaff and work ‘from home’ rather than head back. Make sure you take the full lunch break.

Maybe he is piloting a new method of parliamentary debate.

Maybe they could retask the freedom of speech officers they hired for universities to sort it out given they have absolutely nothing to do in their universities.

Nope, his answer is always “well we’ve already invested over £50b into {insert subject question} so we’re happy with what we’re doing” or “well you talk about that but not our amazing vaccine roll out”…

ironically the prison service just found guilty of neglect and lying and cheating, that goes with the police force, the construction industry and of course the cronyism etc from the very top. Standards are just seemingly non existent anymore

This whole freedom day bollocks feels more like the end of something than the beginning
, then there’s the migrant issue that the Tories are utterly failing at which has loads of gammon blood pressure surging. Then there’s the attacks on the freedom to protest & on the press. There’s also the ongoing stench of corruption & all the shady conetracts. The butcher is going & the only reason he isn’t already is the Tories don’t have a unifying candidate to replace him.
