US Politics Thread

And on Monday, a group of lawyers who tried to get a federal judge in Michigan to overturn that state’s election results based on a collection of sloppy conspiracy theories and questionable affidavits appeared in a Zoom courtroom. They were there to convince that same judge not to slap them with a glut of sanctions for filing such a frivolous complaint in violation of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Not only did the judge not appear convinced in the slightest, but her questions to the assembled attorneys was withering enough to bring one of them to tears.

The US wants to locate a giant new radar system in the UK to track objects in deep space.
The US Space Force is developing the global system to identify potential "targets" up to 36,000km away, in areas of deep space where a lot of military satellites are positioned.

I wish the BBC wouldn’t write in American when it comes to US stories. Took me a while to figure out “locate” doesn’t mean find, it means build.

Lewandowski confessed that he lied in 2016 when he said, "You know Donald Trump. There is nobody who believes that when Donald Trump goes somewhere he does not generate the biggest, largest and most rambunctious crowds on the planet. It's just not true, unequivocally. The Donald Trump campaign and Donald Trump did not pay anybody to attend his announcement."

Now, Lewandowski is saying that he lied, but really it was all Michael Cohen's fault, claiming that the former Trump lawyer hired the actors who were on hand to cheer Trump.

Felt this belonged here rather than the Coronavirus thread. Personally I don't know what the truth is but I am more inclined to believe Fauci. Seems like he is getting out on a technical with the definition not 100% aligning to the Gain of Function medical definition.

The problem is Rand Paul is implying this caused the pandemic whereas I'd be more inclined to believe Fauci that nothing that was funded is related to COVID.

Once again it seems to me political dick swinging and the implications will keep us from knowing the entire truth. Fauci is no saint but I think he has more character and integrity than Paul.

BTW I was trying to find a non-CNN/MSNBC video but I got lazy.

I just posted the same thing in the Coronavirus thread. It probably belongs over here though or maybe it should be in the conspiracy theory thread.

I'm conflicted about this. Generally, if I'm not sure about which side of an argument I want to be on, I'l have a look at the people on each side. I don't want to be involved with anything that has Rand Paul and Marjorie Taylor Green in it.

Still, did the coronavirus which emerged in Wuhan come from the Wuhan Coronavirus lab? That sounds much more likely to me. As Jon Stuart said, if there was an explosion of chocolate in Hershey, Pensilvania where would you start looking?

Fauci knows that he is getting nailed to the cross if they ever find proof that the virus came from a lab he funded in China. You've also got to wonder why they were funding research in China when the US has two similar labs. Was it something that was illegal to research in the US?

I'd like to see proper answers to these questions, not just dismissing them as nonsense or technically untrue.

I am too, the definition thing seems flimsy but it turns out they mean something. Any of us involved in contracts know that. The below should answer your questions but you still have to make a few assumptions and place a bit of trust in people.

Is it suspicious that the WIV is in Wuhan?
“Nine out of ten times, when there’s a new outbreak, you’ll find a lab that will be working on these kinds of viruses nearby,” says Munster.

Does the virus have features that suggest it was created in a lab?
One of the first teams to do so, led by Kristian Andersen, a virologist at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, determined that this was “improbable” for a few reasons, including a lack of signatures of genetic manipulation. 6

That first part isn't true. China's bat population isn't in Wuhan. Wuhan is in central China and the bats are in southern China, Yunnan and Guangxi. The outbreak didn't occur in southern China where the big populations of bats are, it happened in Wuhan where the coronavirus lab is.

They spend a lot of that article talking about how incredibly difficult it is to collect live virus samples from bats. Viruses go through the bat populations and either they die or they recover. To suggest that the idea that an infected bat was flying around, got trapped by hunters and then transported to Wuhan where it was sold, still alive but sick with covid, was then bought and eaten (I assume it was cooked, wouldn't cooking have killed the virus?) would be more likely is a stretch for me.

As for genetic manipulation, I don't know anything about that so I won't comment.

Epidemiologists say the spike proteins could only evolve in the wild, so I'll go with their expert opinion.

I know nothing about DNA or viruses. There have been claims that the virus was manipulated in the Wuhan lab to make it more infective to humans but I've never seen anything to convince me of that.

It still doesn't discount the lab leak theory. Scientists in Wuhan were studying coronaviruses in that lab. Suddenly, there was an outbreak of a coronavirus in Wuhan. Coincidence?

The first thoughts of China's leading expert on coronaviruses when she heard about the outbreak were:

“I wondered if [the municipal health authority] got it wrong,” she says. “I had never expected this kind of thing to happen in Wuhan, in central China.” Her studies had shown that the southern, subtropical provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan have the greatest risk of coronaviruses jumping to humans from animals—particularly bats, a known reservoir. If coronaviruses were the culprit, she remembers thinking, “Could they have come from our lab?”

Scientists specialising in these viruses say their models would not have led to the spike proteins as we see today. Only natural selection leads to one's that are so efficient. These include the Scripps Centre CDX mentions, and also worldwide institutions like the University of Basel.

I'm going with their expertise.

Yes, I'm not disputing that.
